First off, HAPPY PURIM to our Jewish friends tomorrow!! I almost got to see "Esther and the King" with a young and GORGEOUS Joan Collins, Circa 1960, but caught it in the last half hour... and if I am five minutes late, I just can't watch a movie. Yes, I am one of THOSE..
But while I was thinking of Purim, my mind wondered to 'Home For Purim', the "movie" that was trying to get made in the HILARIOUS Christopher Guest 'Mockumentary' "For Your Consideration".
Poll Christoper Guest Films I counted 'Spinal Tap' as a half since he ad-libbed or wrote most of his 'lines', a trick or technique Rob Reiner and later Guest admit to getting from Woody Allen whom did a 'Mockementary' when he did 'Zelig' (A BRILLIANT and FUNNY film, whether you like the Director or not) and also from Mr. Allen's habit of getting GOOD actors and sitting down at length with them alone or in pairs and going over their character, their background, until the actor KNEW who they were playing SOOOO well that some days, he would come with no script and just say "Ok, you 3 or 4, sit at a table, and talk about highschool" and he trusted them to ad-lib, talk over each other, interrupt each other like people do when talking, and created a REALISM that is seldom matched. He TRUSTED the actors that he picked to have the TALENT and to do the job he paid them to do, with or without lines.
Christopher Guest did the same in his BRILLIANTLY SMART and HYSTERICAL Films meant to mock the underside of 4 areas we rarely get a chance to see: Local Theater in Small Towns, Dog Shows, Folk Music, and the Oscar Buzz around a dark horse of a movie and the changes that it takes because of it.
That man is SOOO talented.. he directed, wrote, produced, and acted in these movies, and he is the man of 100 voices, faces, and characters... He convinces us that he IS Nigel, the British musician from Spinal Tap... The VERY Gay Theater Directer in Guffman... A Redneck, Southern, Hillbilly in Best in Show.... An old gentle folk singer in A Mighty Wind...and a Jewish Directer losing it in For Your Consideration. PLUS the man WROTE the music for most of these movies!! Rock, Folk, Musical Theater... he is soooo talented. But he is a quiet and introverted man in real life, married to Jamie Lee Curtis for 30 years!!
I am just an intense fan. I think he is talented in so many areas and has "it" to spare!!
"Nigel" from "Spinal Tap"
"But this one goes to Eleven!!"
"Corky" in "Waiting for Guffman"
His 'Show'.
Guest as "Harlan" and his Dawg in "Best in Show".
Him playing an "Old Folk Singer" in "A Mighty Wind"
Some of his GREAT and usually the same cast, always in a role as different as their last!! Like Parker Posey, The "Queen of the Indies" and Jane Lynch before Glee here in "A Mighty Wind". Gotta LOVE Jane Lynch!! His Casts are AMAZING.
Christopher playing the perplexed director of 'Home for Purim' in "For Your Consideration".
HOPEFULLY, you have had the joy of seeing all four of his Masterpieces in Comedy. If not, and you enjoy this type of comedy, I beg of you to get a hold of the others!! You will laugh so hard, it HURTS.
