Gravity (2013)

Confession: I really didn't want to see this in theatres. First, because the premise terrified me, and second, I tend to reserve theatregoing for 'epic' movies (aka stuff that is special effects laden which lends itself to bigger screen experiences). So when I realized my Groupon was about to expire, I just went with what seemed the best choice and prepared to endure.

And I am here to tell you I was greatly surprised by the whole thing. I didn't know a ton going in (by choice) but it was a lot more than I expected. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just keep my remarks few and invite ya'll to share if you've seen it.

1) Sound editing and mixing HAS to get Oscar nods. Working with the idea that there's no sound in space is hard, and this was so expertly done I'm in awe.

2)Cinematography needs an Oscar as well. The one thing the movie did that I found smart was that the camera moved constantly, which keeps you from orienting yourself to a horizon (which can cause that falling sensation) and it was both true to science and just really beautifully done, frame by frame.

3) Sandra Bullock has always impressed me. Never moreso than here. This might be the first movie I would say is completely carried by a woman, start to finish. She is the story, and I never stop being engaged by her in it.

Now your turn to weigh in!
