Inception - a review by Yearrrghsworrrrrth

Oh, Inception. How I love thee.

See, it's not just that I've been terribly busy, but it's also that this movie is very, very difficult to put into words.

But I'm going to try.

You see, I've seen this film a couple times now and I will probably see it a few more times; It's not just that good, but it begs multiple viewings. In the same manner as Fight Club and 12 Monkeys, you almost always see something you didn't notice before. I can't really say too much about what I noticed that I didn't notice before because it would most certainly provide far too many spoilers so instead what I'm going to talk about is pretty simple: The Concept.

That's right. I just called Inception's concept Simple. You didn't read that wrong. I didn't make a mistake. I meant that. The concept IS simple.

Put an idea in someone's head and make them think it was their own idea. That's it. Forget the dreams, forget the imagery. Forget being able to craft entire worlds of your own design. That's all fluff. That's just the vehicle for one very simple message. Manipulation.

Some people do this every single day and they don't even realize it. It might be something as simple as talking about something you want to do to someone when they're not paying attention and then bringing it up later when they are. They instantly get the feeling that someone told them that it would be really cool if they went there.. but they can't quite even put their finger on whom, or why. Suddenly, they're perking up and saying "Well, then let's go! I'll drive!"

Inception takes this one step further, instead of telling them when they're not paying attention, you're telling their subconcious directly through their dreams. This film handles that concept very cleverly. It's very good at not only showing how difficult manipulation by implanting an idea subliminally actually IS, but also the dangers of doing things like that. It can have terrible consequences and repercussions. It can hurt the people you care the most about. Manipulation, of any sort, is a dangerous thing to toy with because once you start getting your way it becomes like a drug. You start to be unable to survive without other people doing things for you. It can ruin you and make you unable to be alone, unable to cope without having a sycophant hanging on your every word.

But, no matter what... it has to end. It always ends. One day, they all see the manipulator for what they are, or worse, they see them as weak and useless and leave them alone and broken to suffer in solitude.

This is the reason so many famous people turn to drugs, or commit suicide. Everyone loves you when you're God, but no one loves you when you're dirt.

Food for thought.

So, anyway.. if you haven't seen Inception I highly recommend it. It's a fantastic film that really highlights the human condition and the need for companionship.
