Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS

Hello readers. I am posting a few thoughts on Prometheus, but I am busy moving today, so I haven't much time. I will add more as others begin to talk and write about this film.

Few things can get me to an actual theater these days. I have seen the decline of the movie-going experience in the last decade. My home theater is nothing special, but the ability to control my environment while enjoying a film or show on a HDTV with surround sound is still amazing and fun to me. (I remember a time before cable and home video, when only rich people could see a movie from the comfort of their home.)

However, watching Ridley Scott's return to science fiction after over 30 years on a huge Imax screen in 3D is awesome and recommended. I am not going to talk about plot or story here. I don't want to spoil anything for those who are as excited to see Prometheus as I was.

The thematic material I will touch upon briefly: If you took the original ALIEN and gene-spiced it to Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and dashed the mixture with the kind of hardware and ideas found in Blade Runner, you would end up with something like Prometheus.

This is a compliment, because all three of the movies I mentioned above are favorites of mine. True science fiction (as opposed to fantasies like Star Wars) are rare. My personal favorite mind expanding sci-fi films include Blade Runner and 2001, plus Carl Sagan's Contact and the much maligned A.I. Artificial Intelligence, for the ideas as well as the adventure and spectacle.

Prometheus reaches for and almost succeeds in joining this list of great SF. I found the hardware and props in the film to be fascinating, and think that our children or grandchildren will end up in a world with the kinds of incredible technology featured in Prometheus.

The plot is very good and the ending may have been partially done as a favor to fans of Scott's two-film SF punch Alien and Blade Runner. No complaints here, especially if the possibility of a sequel pans out and reaches us before Mr. Scott gets too old to do it.

I wouldn't want anyone else to do made the sequel, it would be like someone else doing the sequels to AVATAR besides James Cameron... It could still be cool, but wouldn't have the 'eye', the care, and the talent of Sir Ridley at the helm, and would be diminished because of it.

I recommend Prometheus, see it on a huge screen, in 3D if possible with the sound cranked up. My seat rattled a few times during the show and it was intense, to be sure. I hope the promise of Ridley Scott doing another film set in the universe of Blade Runner will reach us in the next few years, also. It will be great to have a reason to go out to the theater again! -Article by XIM
