I actually thought I would like this film. A little political intrigue, John Malkovich, and good clean, thriller fun. I was disengaged from it pretty early on but tried to give it a go longer anyway in the hopes that it would grab me at some point. It did not.
I heard this was a very well loved film, and maybe my tastes are a little were too highbrow or that something is wrong with -ME- for not loving a Clint Eastwood film about the secret service. I truly tried to sit through the movie, even long after I had become disenchanted. But I cannot lie to you guys, my beautiful film lovers. I gave it chance after chance and finally after about an hour in, I realized that this film was not going to change for the better and I was DONE. This view may be unpopular but at least that is what we are all here for...honest discussion of what we think of old films and new. I know this is a film that is 20 years old but it did NOT age like a fine wine, my lovelies. In my opinion, it turned to vinegar quite some time ago.
The Next Film I saw Today was "The Last Tycoon"
I honestly thought this would be one of my favourites. First off, I ADORE F. Scott Fitzgerald. I LOOOVE Irving Thalberg, Love old school, Hollywood, the studio system, and I loved this book. SO WHAT WENT WRONG!?!?! I thought I would LOOOOVE this! Why didn't I?? Was it the 40 years in between when one of my hero's (F. Scott F.) wrote it and when it was finally filed?? Was it Elia Kazan (Again, I think not. For he's a huge talent.) I don't know what it was, but something didn't connect those dots correctly. I hope a Biopic on Irving Thalburg (and Norma Shearer) is done the RIGHT way, to honour the Boy Genius that almost single-handedly made the movies what they were/are, and yet few people know his name. Sad.
But we are here to discuss films we saw and not ones we think -should- be made and I was let down by both the ones I saw today, although I am VERY surprised that I wasn't a big fan of "The Last Tycoon". Or let me put it this way: The last tycoon, the MAN, Irving Thalburg, I am a VERY devoted fan to. As a movie, 'The Last Tycoon' fizzled and didn't do him justice. It just made me sad.
Love One Another!!
