the weirdest evaporators show ever?

As a Vancouverite, I've been to many an Evaporators show--so I can safely say that last night's "Doot Doo La Doot Doo...Doot Doot!" DVD Release party was at least the weirdest I'd ever been to. And I was at the one that happened just after Nardwuar was hospitalized (the band + people filling in on the mike), so I know what I'm talking about here. So what was so weird about it? The show was at the Norm Theatre out at the SUB, so everybody was in their seats. That's just wrong. But we had no cues, no idea what to do: were we supposed to abandon our seats or were we supposed to stay there? What were our boundaries? Outside of the chosen few, nobody really challenged this unspoken rule of remaining seated throughout the entire ride. Weird for all the wrong reasons.

Of course, there were a few instances of being weird for the right reasons. Like Chris Murphy of Sloan filling in for John Collins, who's currently touring with the New Pornographers. Okay, maybe not so much weird, but still not something you see everyday. And, um...gee, well that was pretty much it. Still good to see the Evaporators, though. It always is.

Oh, and one last thing: If you have a spare twenty and haven't procured a copy of "Doot Doo La Doot Doo...Doot Doot!" on DVD, it would be a Very Good Idea. Over the years, Nardwuar's done many, many, many interviews--a great deal of which show up here. Granted, a lot of the footage seems to be from the Much Music era (in fact, the DVD features both of the Nard Wars specials)--but this saves you the trauma of actually having to watch Much Music!* To get a taste of Nardwuar's interview style, check out his website. Make sure you have a few hours to kill first.

*Explanation for you Yanks: Much Music used to equal MTV, but better. Now it's reduced to mostly MTV shows, shows inspired by MTV shows, and the odd music video. The only worthwhile things about it are The Wedge, Nardwuar, and a sock puppet.

music, nardwuar
