again, I am not surprised

Like the heading says, I am not surprised at the results of the election. But really, is anybody? Sure, we may be disappointed and possibly a little scared, but surprised? Nah. Hell, outside of the "Harper's already the leader" my dad uttered while watching the CBC on Monday night, we haven't even discussed the results around my house. We knew.

Kids, voting is an optimist's game. I've been voting for a third of my life, and rarely have my desires ever matched the desires of the majority. And that one time they did? Well, let's not go there. The best anybody can do is register, vote for their choice--trying really hard not to throw away their vote in the process--and wish upon a star. Well, that and inform themselves on the issues before voting. And no matter the outcomes, no matter how pessimistic I may get in my advancing age, I'll always show up at the polling place on election day until my hands are too cramped to hold a pencil and make a mark. Seeing as how it's my right, I might as well.

Speaking of optimism, there are pockets of hope, like how the Conservatives won on a minority vote or how the NDP doubled their seats in my province. It's not all bad. In fact, it could be worse. Or at least that's what I keep telling myself.
