Spring at Midnight in Oakland

and then i realized that it’s a magical life - i just hadn’t been stopping to see it.

tonight driving home from practice - the sounds we built together ringing in my ears, the jasmine and honeysuckle was flooding the car with damp night magic and the lilacs were at the local food co-op today. spring is here with all of its miracles, life and dreams. i felt my own skin sparkle today when i talked to my poet friend. her eyes danced at me and she gave me her book to make a performance to so that we can put poems to music at the art show at the end of the month when she is taking her new book on tour. and before that the photographers eyes danced at me. he made me tea and we took pictures of my tattoos while the cat eyed me suspiciously. we made plans for more photos out by the ocean where we would hang accordions from the trees.

the bands album is almost done. we need to record the next one over the summer. the other bands album is half done. we might end up touring internationally before we finish it. the third band is recording an ep in may. most of the songs on all of the albums are original. i love the people that i make music with. this is my family. these bandmates, poets, artists, performers, friends - this is my family.

artists make up my life. art makes up the rest of it. my wife is in the next room editing a film. she spent the evening writing screenplays.

who cares if making rent is hard. this. this beauty. these things we make and share. this is life.
