I'm having a few (new) issues with the U.S. these days (as if that's anything new!). Sometimes I feel that as I sit here, across the ocean, thousands of miles away, the U.S. is falling further and further into shame and corruption. Perhaps it's the light that the U.K. sheds on the situation, but I do read the NY Times pretty much everyday, so I doubt if that's it.
My first major issue is Former Rep. Mark Foley. Okay, WHAT THE FUCK?!?! First, he's in a porn email scandal. Then it turns out that these emails include sexually suggestive emails to a 16 year old boy. Then he checks himself into rehab. Then he makes a statement that he was sexually molested as a child (I'm sorry- being molested as a child is no fucking excuse for doing it as an adult. I come from family that has had multiple cases of sexual abuse with children and none of them who were abused, has never turned around and done it themselves.). And then the icing on the cake is that he is gay. Perfect, a gay man who has sexually inappropriate relations with children. Just what the gay community needs publicized by the/a Republican. What on earth is next in this scandal?! *Edit* As I was writing this, the NY Times posted an article that one of his aides spoke up about his inappropriate emails with a 16 year old boy prior to 2005. I can't understand for the life of me, how any person, democrat or republican, could turn a blind eye to such actions! Why wasn't this stopped then?!?! I can't help but to think that perhaps he in some way thought that by being on the caucus of Missing and Exploited Children would somehow make up for his feelings and inclinations. What a sick and demented man. The only good thing to come out of all this I suppose, is that its happening pretty close to elections. We really need more Lamonts to get elected and give the democrats control again. I just hope it doesn't backfire and get the fence sitters to swing to the uber-conservatives.
Next on my list of concerns and complaints is the Monterrey Climate talks this week. The whole point of these talks on behalf of the G8, is to reach an agreement between industrial and developing nations on a long-term strategy to cut emissions. In September I read and saw Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth and completely agree that the Earth is in a downward spiral economically and we need to act now. Hell, I've been feeling this since Captain Planet and the Planeteers! The fact that the U.S. has not ratified the Kyoto Protocol, is absolute bullshit. We're the world's biggest polluter. Not to mention the richest country in the world. We should be at the forefront of this agreement. And because of our stance, countries like China "argued that if the world's richest nation was not part of the Kyoto targets, it was unfair to expect developing nations to be subject to legally binding limits. And now, all of Bush's bullshit about how saving the Earth is going to hurt the U.S. economically is being spewed all over again, despite the fact that the Monterrey talks were supposed to show how being green can actually help our economy, not negatively impact it. The U.S. needs to step up...like now!
This is not a rant, but definitely a major concern. I'm really surprised and concerned at all of the violence happening in schools across the country and Canada. I guess, having been in school during Columbine and its successors, I thought that was going to be the last series of such events. I definitely didn't think there would be another wave of school killings. It's a horrible series of tragedies. Any DV graduates know how DV is handling? I know they had a record high number of bomb threats in response to Columbine in 1999...is that happening again at DV? Just curious, especially since Lancaster county is so close.
I'm starting to get all riled up, so I think I need to stop here for now. Make sure you're registered to vote in November. Most state deadlines to register are this week/next week. You can go to www.govote.org and to register. And if you're in doubt as to whether or not you are registered, it doesn't hurt for you to do it a second time to be sure. :)

And my world came tumbling down
You're the devil in disguise
I looked into your face
My heart was dancing all over the place
I'd like to change my point of view
If I could just forget about you.
