Cook was in the office, door half open but headphones on and plugged into his electric guitair. He was noodling with this bit of bridge that was driving him crazy. He tried it fast, tried it slow but nothing seemed to come out in the right way. His fingers slid up and down the guitar, trying to see if a noise would catch him.
A small hand wrapped it’s way onto his fingers and he blinked when he saw familiar eyes staring up at him with a face splitting grin.
He put his headphones onto his shoulder. “What’s up Ladie?”
“Daddy, you gotta see this. Gotta,” she tugged at his fingers. This was the moment where he should remind his daughter that the office was working space but she looked so damn happy and was buzzing like Archie did when he was really excited. So essentially he was doomed for all eternity, forever to be wrapped around his daughter’s fingers. This time literally.
He lifted his guitar off his lap, unhooked the straps and wires and laid it gently into its nook.
“Have to. I have to see this.”
Even though they were on the move Addy took a moment to roll her eyes at her dad. “Okay, you have to.”
They didn’t make it to the living room before they started hearing the loud laughter echoing around them. It was cloudy outside, Cook noticed for the first time all day that the light was different and he wasn’t sure why that made his whole body feel different; like the sky was a blanket that warmed his entire house.
He thought for a second about pausing just so he could absorb the whole thing. The light, the way the air smelled, the feel of his daughter’s hand tugging him forward, the giggles from the other room. But Adelaide was determined and in a second they turn a corner and find Archie with his back to them, kneeling on the floor and laughing so loud it almost masked the noise of Connor’s joining laughter.
Archie turned his head with a smile. “Oh good! The kids costumes finally came in, you have to see this.”
He shuffled to the left a little and when Connor came into sight Cook let out a laugh. In the center of their living room his barely a year old son dressed in what appeared to be a full on monkey costume, tail and big twirly ears.
He brandished a stuffed banana and with odd clarity called out, “Ooo ooo ah ah.”
“Papi said we got a pet monkey for Halloween,” Addy laughed as she ran towards her brother. “I prefer the monkey! Can we name it Rex?”
Archie paused to tut. “Don’t say that about your brother.”
Connor, oblivious to any slight against him, offered the banana to Addy. “Ooo ooo ooo, ah aha. I MOKIE!”
Cook chuckled and knelt down to join in. He finally got the moment to just accept what was going on. He smiled as Archie helped Adelaide into her bumble bee costume. As soon as the wings were on she had her magic wand and she was off. She ran around the room and buzzed louder and louder, while her brother bounced around happily.
“You know,” Archie said, head leant against Cook’s shoulder. “We don’t have costumes yet.”
“We have to wear costumes?”
“For the Johns’ party, remember?”
Cook faked a sigh. “Oh yeah, that.”
“Got any ideas?” Archie looked hopeful.
Cook shrugged. “Parents of a bumble bee and a monkey.”
Archie shoved him. “Come on, it’ll be fun.”
“I could dress as you and you as me,” Cook laughed. They’d joked about it before. But Archie didn’t crack up this time. He just got a look on his face like he was thinking and Cook blinked. “I was kidding.”
Archie nodded and waved his hand, Cook knew he wasn’t listening to a word he said.
He put a hand up to shield his eyes. “This isn’t good.”
It’s not good, actually. It’s perfect.
(I'm probably going to post this as well. It got kind of long. Hope you like :D)
