Despite the fact that Cook kind of drove like a crazy person, David always preferred being in the passenger seat. It wasn’t often that he got to watch Cook without feeling like a complete goofball or worrying about paparazzi catching them on film. David had slipped a few times in the past and the resulting pictures always made him blush. He knew it was only a matter of time till people put the pieces together and saw what was written all over his face.

So he took advantage of the drives and watched happily as Cook’s brows furrowed and relaxed depending on the traffic or as his fingers tapped a long to the rhythm of whatever was playing on the radio. He listened as Cook talked about his day and didn’t even mind when he spouted particularly colorful language at the passing motorists. He just soaked it all up.

“Are you listening?” Cook asked, and um. No. David hadn’t actually been listening, to be honest. He’d been a little distracted by the way Cook licked his lips between sentences.

“Sorry,” David blushed. “I… I lost track for a second?”

Cook gave him a sidelong look, but cracked a smile. “I should have known. You had that look on your face again.”

“What look?”

“The one you usually get right before you get an idea, usually followed by two days with your head bent over a piano,” Cook nudged him, keeping his eyes on the radio. “So … hum it.”

David bit at the corner of his lip and frowned. He wasn’t thinking of a song, but it wasn’t like he really wanted to say to Cook ‘I was staring at your lips moving’. He thought for a minute, tugging nervously at the hem of his shirt.

“It wasn’t really a tune,” he started slowly. “More like an idea?”

“So shoot.”

David swallowed a few times, finally turning himself away from Cook and focusing out on the road ahead of them. “I was thinking about a song about driving.”

“A song about driving?”

“Yeah,” he refused to blush. The idea was still half formed but he figured he’d talk it out. “Um. About how… how when you’re a kid, cars are magical. They take you places, sure, but usually the places don’t matter. It’s the time you get to spend with your mom and dad… your family. It’s the music and games you play.

“Then when you get older you kind of lose that. Cars become a means to an end, from point A to point B in the quickest way possible. And that’s kind of sad, you know?”

He turned and caught Cook giving him a look out of the corner of his eye.

“But then… sometimes you get that back. With the right person you lose the um… well. The destination stops being as important. Cause it’s just you and them in this small little space that’s like your own little world. It comes to be about the journey again? And it’s magic all over again.”

The silence in the car made David shift uncomfortably. He watched Cook’s profile but the look on his face was unreadable.

“Totally sappy, right?” he laughed nervously, looking away again. “It was just an idea…”

Cook’s hand landed on top of his and squeezed. “Hey, Archie. Breathe. It’s a good idea.”

“It’s a love song,” he said stupidly then froze. It sounded even sillier when he said it out loud.

Cook’s fingers laced into his and when he looked up Cook was giving him a small smile. “Yeah, I kind of caught that.”
