“Are you sure this is the best idea?”
Both JJ and Derek laughed, Henry looked undecided. Not that Spencer could fault him, his cognitive brain function at eight months wouldn’t allow much comprehension. He wiggled in Spencer’s arms and Spencer felt a fresh wave of panic.
“How about Derek holds him?” he offered him over but Derek put his hands up.
“He’s your godson, time to bond.”
JJ beamed at him until he couldn’t help but try and relax. This turned out to be a bad idea, because it meant bringing out a camera. JJ practically cooed at them while he stood mostly still (his brain screaming, ‘baby isn’t crying, baby isn’t crying, DON’T MOVE.’). He attempted a smile but the amused look on Derek’s face told him that it fell short.
Henry wriggled again, letting out an annoyed strangled noise and Spencer seriously just wanted to give him back. When he was five, maybe, and could learn the rules of chess and was able to understand him and didn’t have diapers… well then maybe he would be a little more anxious to play. For now he had no idea what to do.
Derek wiggled his fingers towards Henry who giggled and took one to pull towards his mouth. He turned towards JJ. “We’ve got it, you go do what you need to do.”
JJ hesitated, camera still in hand. “Are you sure? I can really take him with me.”
“Go,” Derek teased, pointing towards the door.
After what Spencer found to be an over the top goodbye to Henry, she was going to be back in maybe an hour, JJ left the house looking more upset than her son did.
Though Henry was a little annoyed, wriggling back and forth in Spencer’s arms until Spencer really had no idea what to do. He hummed a classical piece, rubbed circles on his back (first clockwise, then counterclockwise). It was just… nothing worked. And Derek looked slowly but surely like he was going to crack up laughing.
“I really don’t see what’s funny here.”
“Put him down, kid.”
Spencer’s eyes went wide. “On the floor?”
“Yeah, on the floor. Trust me, he’ll survive.”
Spencer complied, only because Henry’s wiggles were getting to the point of dangerous swaying. There was a large puppy printed blanket in the center of the floor and the instant that he was placed down Henry rolled from his back and onto all fours. Spencer blinked as the baby made it’s way away from him.
“Maybe I should hold him.”
Derek laughed again. “You seriously haven’t been around babies that much, have you? He’s just adventuring, I’m sure JJ has the house baby proofed. Chill, just watch him.”
Spencer followed the baby around nervously, where as Derek sat down on a chair and watched Spencer instead. Baby proofed or not the living room was a nightmare of cords and after about ten minutes Spencer gave up, gingerly picking up the wiggling baby and walking over to where Derek sat.
“Now what?” Derek asked.
Spencer, who might feel completely out of his depth but had a doctorate (thank you very much), placed Henry in his lap and nodded. “Now we’re going to teach him object permanence.”
He placed his hands over his face and removed them. Henry startled but then let out a small but clear giggle. Spencer felt like a peacock as he preened at Derek. “See that? You like that, don’t you Henry? Objects still exist without you knowing they are there, got it?”
“I saw,” Derek smiled fondly, seeming to give in to the urge to give him a quick peck on the lips. “But Spencer?”
Spencer lost track of the moment. “Yeah?”
“It’s called Peek-a-boo.”
