Title: the darkness between the fireflies
Pairing: David Cook/David Archuleta
Rating: PG-13 (ish)?
Summary: David remembered his first kiss fondly. (Title taken from a Mason Jennings' song called Darkness Between the Fireflies and the lines, "And jealousy has got no use for me, the past is beautiful like the darkness between the fireflies."
Author's Notes: Written for my Thirty Day Meme. (Today is fanfiction!) This was started months ago and is short and sappy but ... um. Hopefully not in a bad way? Looked over by openice (♥) but not betaed so all mistakes are mine.

It started with Johns, naturally, who decided to tell them all about his first kiss when they were all bored and still reeling off of the after show adrenaline rush. It wasn’t uncommon to have weird discussions, so David shouldn’t have been shocked by the story he was actually more shocked it had taken this long to start in the first place.

Johns had been in his early teens and not exactly wanted on both parties behalf and ended with a black eye and a reputation as a ‘bad boy’. (Which, as it stood, was a badge of honor he wore through out his youth.)

After Johns came Syesha (which had a It’s My Party moment at her sweet sixteen) and then they all decided to join in. Going around the loose circle it seemed each one had varying levels of horror stories (including braces, teeth smashing and an unfortunately timed sneeze) until it came to David, who almost felt bad that he didn’t have a funny anecdote to add into the mix.

David remembered his first kiss fondly, which he knew was kind of rare. It had been with a girl named Maggie, and he had had a crush on her for years before hand. She had been sweet, really caring and kind and she ended up asking him to the Sadie Hawkins dance when he was obviously too chicken to make the first move. At the end of the night she kissed him on her front step, like they were in a movie. She hadn’t laughed when he didn’t now what to do right off the bat, and he couldn’t remember if he was her first kiss but he somewhat doubted it. It had been a long kiss, fifteen or twenty seconds, made longer by the fact that neither one of them did anything to make it anymore than what it was, two sets of lips smooshed together. At fourteen he had thought that that he was the coolest kid in school having made it to first base. They went to school together for the next few years, but after the one date they didn’t talk again, he had no regrets.

The girls let out a collective ‘aww’ when he was done and he felt silly when he blushed. (He was twenty-five, what self-respecting man blushed at twenty-five?)

Archie looked relieved though, which was nice. “I was just beginning to think I didn’t want my first kiss if it meant I was going to click teeth with someone or end up with a bloody lip or something.”

The room went silent as each person remembered the Larry King interview and the fact that once again they had forgotten just how young Archie actually was. It was weird to think, as most of the time it felt like he was the grown up sent to monitor all the random hooligans that just happened to be taller than him. David turned in time to see the tips of Archie’s ears go bright red and he felt compelled to say something, he just didn’t know what.

Brooke beat him to it, “Well, they aren’t all bloody lips. It gets better with practice?”

“The practice is the best part,” Johns said with an over-the-top attempt at wistful. “It keeps the girl quiet.” Carly chucked an M&M at his head, and Brooke chucked the pillow she was laying on. Johns retaliated with the pillow back and somehow David felt like maybe he hadn’t left high school after all… that is until the manager came in to tell them it was time to get on the buses and go to the next city.

And it wasn’t something David had actively thought about; in fact he had all but forgotten it until a year later. Then, less than a foot away from Archie, hands fisted at his side it was all he could think about. It was ridiculous, it wasn’t his first kiss for fuck’s sake, he was an adult… Archie was an adult. But he knew, he knew it was Archie’s first kiss and that was all David could think about. He inhaled and exhaled and focused, made sure there wasn’t risk of teeth clacking, bloody lips or awkward moments.

He tried for sweet and soft and planned, and was pretty sure he succeeded. He put a hand on Archie’s cheek and jutted out his tongue just enough to make Archie aware that it was there and maybe even promise what would be in the future and he pulled back before he let it get too far. Archie had his eyes glazed over a little, and his face split into a huge grin and David felt an odd sense of pride, like he was paying it forward. (A wild moment thought to call Maggie and say ‘Thank you’ but he returned to his senses quick enough.)

“So,” he asked, and he could resist the grin. “Worth the suspense?”

Archie blushed, just a little, “Um, maybe we could practice?”

Johns was partially right, practice really was the best part.
