Fanmix & Ficlets :: Cook/Archuleta "with our roots (become a tree)"

Oct 23, 2009 00:23

Notes: The title comes from a song not actually on the mix. (Southern Girl by Incubus, sorry it just didn't fit but I seriously can't think of a better title. It is perfect for the entire verse for me?) It's for the kid!verse and struck me the other night while humming along to "Our House". As a good chunk of the fics I wrote in the verse sprung from music I also mixed in the links to all the fics posted so far AND there are a few ficlets that are brand new! (See 3, 4, 11 & 13. :)) As for the cover art, um. I am still learning, so while concrit is welcome, please be gentle? I tried to obscure the kids faces as I got the pics from all over and of course have no rights to them. This is all make believe, after all.

Can’t you see?
We were meant to be.
We were meant for each other
Destiny brought us together.

a series of (not so) unfortunate events

2.) So Small :: Boyce Avenue

Sometimes that mountain you've been climbing
Is just a grain of sand
What you've been out there searching for forever,
Is in your hands
When you figure out love is all that matters, after all
It sure makes everything else
Seem so small

Sweet Words

3.) Everything’ll Be Alright (Will’s Lullaby) :: Joshua Radin

But I look at you, warm in your dream
While your mobile dances above
And I think to myself
It's a beautiful night
And I know everything
Is gonna be alright
Yes now I know
It'll be alright

When Archie walked into the baby’s room he met Cook’s petrified stare and had to bite back a laugh. Addy wailed in his arms, bright red and in the middle of a terrible 8-month-old melt down. She kicked her feet and arched her back. It broke Archie’s heart to see her so miserable but oddly made it ache in a good way as well. It was his family after all and besides he had had six blessed hours of sleep in a row, he could handle this.

“Where’s Mokie?” he asked and Cook looked over in a panic and blinked like maybe Archie was speaking Spanish. “Mokie, Cook. Where is he?”

And he could almost see the light bulb above Cook’s head before he answered, “My side of the bed.”

Archie turned on his heels and went into their room and grabbed the well-loved sock monkey. At sight Addy tilted forward and pitifully snapped him into her hands, digging her head into the center of her stuffed best friends’ neck with a dramatic sniffle. She looked up at Cook and sighed, dug her head into his neck and closed her eyes. Cook’s eyes shut as well, and he hummed a tune Archie was sure he was writing just for her.

When he put her down in her crib and snapped the side back up he turned a sheepish look towards Archie.

“Thank you,” he whispered as they walked out of the room. “I guess I haven’t gotten the hang of this thing yet.”

Archie put his hand on Cook’s lower back and rubbed. “Neither of us have, but it’s a team thing.”

Cook smiled and stopped to place a lazy kiss to Archie’s lips. “Good thing I have the MVP.”

“Yea,” Archie smiled and rolled his eyes playfully. “I can’t believe you forgot MOKIE.”

4.) Our House :: Phantom Planet

Come to me now
And rest your head for just five minutes
Everything is good
Such a cosy room
The windows are illuminated
By the sunshine through them
Fiery gems for you
Only for you

"Flee flee!" A high-pitched squeal came running at Cook just as he got in the door. Followed by a mass of brown hair and giggles. "Oh, Daddy good!"

He opened his arms in time to catch his four-year-old daughter as she leapt into his arms. "What cha fleeing Addy?"

He got the answer in the form of a tottering not quite two year old boy charging at his leg followed by a tired looking Archie.

"Is it the dreaded Connor-monster?" Cook asked Adelaide who squealed with delight.

"And the Papi-monster too!"

Cook eyed Archie and gave him a wink. "Looks like the Papi monster needs a nap. What do you say to trying to tame the Connor-monster with a trip to McDonald’s for chocolate milk?"

Connor stopped mid assault of his legs to turn his large hazel eyes up. ”Choyet?"

"YES CHOCLATE, DADDY!"

Cook smiled at the mirrored looks of glee on his kids faces, “I guess it’s unanimous then. Shoes?”

As Addy wiggled out of his arms and charged off to find her shoes Cook grinned over at Archie and received a grateful smile.

(Funnily enough, the first bit of fic I ever wrote in this verse.)

5.) Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel) :: Billy Joel

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me

You and I Will Be

6.) Seven Years :: Norah Jones

Spinning, laughing, dancing to
her favorite song
She's a little girl with nothing wrong
And she's all alone
A little girl with nothing wrong
And she's all alone

A Tale of Grace

7.) Sunny Side Up :: Martina McBride

I still get that feeling I felt when I fell in love with my baby
Everytime he makes me smile
I still see the beautiful in your favorite song on the radio
Turn it up and here we go
Look at everything we have
Baby, it ain't so bad
Today everything is sunny side up
I'm hangin' on to happy and pushin' my luck

you drive me crazy (but I sort of love it) by mausi

8.) Still Fighting It :: Ben Folds

Everybody knows
It hurts to grow up
And everybody does
It's so weird to be back here.
Let me tell you what
The years go on and
We're still fighting it, we're still fighting it

9.) How Your Love Makes Me Feel :: Diamond Rio

It’s like just before dark
Jump in the car
Buy an ice cream and see how far we can drive before it melts kinda feelin
Thats how your love makes me feel inside
Theres a cow in the road and you swerve to the left
Fate skips a beat and it scares you to death and you laugh until you cry
Thats how your love makes me feel inside

Fate Skips a Beat

10.) Keep Me in Your Thoughts :: Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers

I know it's morning and that you need to go
You look so lovely in the morning glow
The only thing I ask is that you know
That I will keep you in my thoughts throughout the day

11.) 1 2 3 4 :: Plain White T’s

Givin' me more love than I have ever had
Make it all better when I'm feelin' sad
Tell me that I'm special even when I know I'm not
Make it feel good when I hurt so bad
Barely gettin' mad, I'm so glad I found you
I love bein' around you
You make it easy

“I’m getting married,” Addy said from the back seat and the look of sheer horror on Archie’s face forced Cook to look out the window and put a hand over his face or face the wrath of an annoyed six year old.

When he got himself back under his own control he smiled back at her, “You are?”

“Yeah, Brendon and I are going to get married. On Saturday.”

‘Brendon?’ Cook mouthed and Archie shrugged, still vaguely wide eyed.

From the other car seat Connor joined in on the conversation, “I come?”

“Of course,” Addy said, “We are going to have it at his place. He has a pool.”

“Well, we will have to make sure it’s after Connor’s nap then…”

“Why are you encouraging her?”

Cook coughed to cover up a laugh.

12.) You & Me (Acoustic) :: Dave Matthews Band

Oh, and when the kids are old enough
We gonna teach them to fly
You and me together, we could do anything, Baby
You and me together yes, yes

Teach Them to Fly

13.) You ruined everything :: Jonathan Coulton

Baby you know it's funny
All those stories coming true
Despite my better efforts it's all for you
The worst kind of cliche
I'll be with you til the day you leave
You ruined everything in the nicest way

The entire trip had been a comedy of errors. They overestimated Connor’s patience level and underestimated the number of fans that would recognize them, which led to a quite put out three year old throwing an epic temper tantrum outside the Nemo ride. Even with the sunglasses and hats they had been stopped a few too many times for either of their kids liking.

Cook had thought he planned it out well. They didn’t show up until that morning and waited till after Connor’s nap to venture into the park. They had fed them both, gotten them both changed before they walked into the park in the late afternoon. They had hoped that it would translate to the least traffic, but were obviously wrong.

Truth told Cook didn’t get why they stopped them both. He had thought that at worst they would stop Archie and that would leave his hands free to keep Addy and Connor busy but that was proven false with the screams of two teenagers in front of Star Tours. Maybe it was the fact that they were out and a family that somehow garnered attention but he hadn’t seen teenagers crying over him in years.

Neither one of them wanted to hurt any of their fans feelings, they loved their fans really … but they were on vacation. It wasn’t one of his finer moments when he snapped at the third girl to ask for a photo with them all. (They didn’t like to include their kids in anything that could go public, not that it stopped it happening but it was something they liked to avoid.)

“Papi, I wanna ride Nemo,” Addy screamed at the top of her lungs as Cook picked up her screaming brother and turned a look at Archie with a fronw. Connor beat his fists on Cook’s chest and teared up and it was just… too much. For either one of them to handle.

It was kind of a nightmare.

“Take her, we’ll meet back at the room?” Cook offered, trying not to notice all the stares Connor’s screams caused.

When Archie walked in two hours later, he had a sleeping Addy clinging to his neck and looked like he had just walked through a warzone. He walked over to put her down on the cot in the corner and then pointed towards the balcony.

“So,” Cook said, settling into one of the chairs and leaning back, “tomorrow we bring security?”

“Probably a good idea,” Archie nodded.
