the joys of reports.

Dec 02, 2004 16:06

the following is a very long report i did for my sociology class. i was asked to make a survey on the events and activities i saw. mainly abuse, this being physical, emotional, and verbal.

remember this was for a class so i couldnt entirely voice my opinion ( type of language when something really frustrated me) so i said the word "pooh" a lot.

enjoy.

The Hallways of our lives

The hallways of Lake Highlands High school can be a very dangerous place. Which is why I have taken it upon myself to see just how dangerous it could be. This poll shows just what type of abuse and how much I see or partake in everyday of the week. Now about all these things happen everyday but this is just what I saw with my own eyes when paying attention. And I saw plenty in only a few minutes.

Monday: We begin with the physical abuse. Well every five seconds you or someone you love will be pushed around the halls. What im about to say will come off as racist, which thinking about I hate, but its how I feel everyday and that very thought scares me. Walking through C-hall every morning before school on my way to the student center is like walking through a jungle filled with lion’s, snakes, and just plain mean things who don’t care that you have feelings. C-hall is the designated black American hallway. In order to get to your destination you have to bob and weave and slip through any crevice of space you can find. You do this because “they” don’t like to stand up against the wall. No they stop in the middle of the hall (and of course any race is guilty of this but in halls such as B hall “they” sit on the ground against the lockers trying to stay out of the way). And lord forbid you accidentally bump into them. Oh god they will think you just shot their mother. They get all defensive and just about ready to jump you. In a harsh tone they say, “excuse you” when in reality they bumped into you. I said they a lot in the last paragraph but I stick by it because when I bumped into someone of my own color we both reply at the same time “oops sorry”. Well that’s only over pushing (but pushing I see everyday so I went into more detail now). I wrote down kicking because while talking to friends outside waiting for class to begin, I don’t remember who it was that kicked, but our own Chris was kicked in a place that no man should ever be kicked. I’m not sure if he got the other guy back though. Slapping is another one of the most famous ways of abuse. If you’re joking around with someone and the person didn’t like it, well watch out, you’re about to get slapped. I am also an abuser of the “pulling” option. When I want to go somewhere and I don’t want to go alone, someone’s going with me.
And now for verbal abuse. No matter what hall you’re in or where you are in the school be it inside or out, you will hear yelling, swearing and someone being told to shut up. Put downs, this is mainly when you over hear someone talking bad about someone behind their back. Or people just flat out making fun of someone. I haven’t really seen any stereotypical “ oh my god you’re such a loser go away” type of put downs like in movies. I know it happens, I guess I’m just that oblivious or used to it. Now the yelling brings us back to C-hall. I do hope you invest in some earplugs before going down this hall. Yes there is yelling everywhere, but you’ve never heard it before like this. Swearing, oh dear god swearing. Well even im guilty of this one, who isn’t, it seems every student in this school talks like a sailor. I don’t actually hear people making sexual like gross porn or cheesy movie type comments, its more like horrible cheesy innuendo’s *cough* Zak *cough*. And as for the threats, well, go up to a group of people who don’t look too happy, “ cause they will cut you”.
Surprisingly enough I didn’t see a whole lot of emotional abuse, either I wasn’t looking hard enough or that’s the one thing we don’t really attack on. I did however see someone being ordered around, or not so much around but ordered to go away, or once again “you will get cut”. But mean looks are something you can always count on. Always, be it rain shine, hell (or was it hill, either one works) or high water, someone will stare you or the person next to you down until you want to crawl under a rock. It really sucks when you don’t know if people are looking at you or the person behind you. It’s much worse when the whole class is doing it. Like in my English class, the kid behind me had fallen asleep and was making odd faces that the rest of my immature senior (yes I said senior) English class thought to be hilarious. Well everyone started laughing and looking in my direction and im thinking “ oh crap maybe there’s something on me” but no, it was the kid behind me.

Tuesday: This day was way more calm then the day before. Hitting and pushing seemed to be the only real form of physical abuse I picked up on. And of course like I stated earlier, you will always here yelling, shut up, and swearing. C hall, need I say more? And lunch rooms finest, mean looks.

Wednesday: I saw the normal pushing and was pushed a few times myself. Your average verbal abuse only today we were graced with some putdowns.Once again this is high school and what we do best is give mean looks.

Thursday: This was the first day to see physical abuse with a weapon. And who said chemistry books could only be used for learning? This was followed by your normal pushing, average verbal, and your mean looks. But on this day I overheard some jealous accusations going on in the bathroom. So apparently Sherrie slept with Damien who was still going on with Tara. Well Sherrie best watch out because a group of very angry girls are about to get “krunk” and go “ cut someone”.

Friday: And finally, you cant get much more hyper than this, it’s a Friday, which means it’s the weekend. Which then translates into a whole lot more abuse next week because someone will “sleep with someone’s girlfriend / boyfriend” or have a wild mad party in which can be fully explained and talked about unless using every bad word on the face of this planet, cause then the story wouldn’t seem any bit as interesting.
Fridays list includes pushing, hitting, using weapons, pulling, and punching. Your average verbals with a bonus of threats seeing as though it is the weekend and “if you mess with my girl” or “if she shows up with Joey, its going to be war”. Oh and of course, the sexual comments, cause no one wants to be without for the weekend. God our school is horribly romantic. Nothing says love than the back of a pick up. Once again, the weekend would not be complete with out the daily dosage of mean looks. But lets not forget scaring people, cause Tim doesn’t want to see Matt anywhere near him or any of his crew at all. In fact he doesn’t want to see him when he comes to school on Monday.
Well with that said and done, anyone could now be prepared to walk the hallways of Lake Highlands. Might I suggest a full body covering suit, earphones, a helmet, and a good psychologist.

if you read the entire thing then yay for you, if not, please scroll back up and read with love.

oh yes and love your neighbor and all that good stuff.
