The Presence of Greatness

I'm not a huge fanboy or anything (why NOT, you ask?) -- but I did get to see Stephen Sondheim tonight.

There's this big award given every year - the Sachs award - given to someone whose work does lots for the city or helps reflect on our lovely arts culture. For so many reasons, he was the unanimous recipient of this year's award. There was a private reception at the Playhouse in the Park, so I took Roy and we got to see a lovely program featuring Pamela Myers (of CCM's first music theatre graduating class) and a video with a bunch of local talents.

It's amazing how profoundly one musician can affect so many people's lives, but people go gaga over this guy. I have to admit, his work IS amazing, and it's terrific that he's still living and working and showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. Ultimately, though, I'm a big fan of anything that brings positive attention to Cincinnati, so it was a nice event to attend.
