Ohio has been a big battleground for the domestic partner benefit fight. The Board of Trustees at my employer, the University of Cincinnati, has been notoriously conservative in refusing to discuss the issue. Glad you asked those questions. I'm happy to answer the ones I can.

Gay marriage in Canada is definitely "real", as valid as a marriage between a man and a woman. You can be married in a church, but what makes the marriage legal is the registration with a provincial registry office. No church can be compelled to marry a same-sex couple if that would violate its religious principles, but many churches in Canada will either perform the ceremony or allow the church to be used for this purpose. Toronto is the home of the largest Metropolitan Community Church congregation, and MCC was instrumental in the court cases leading to official recognition of gay marriages.

Marriages performed in other jurisdictions are generally recognized in the US, but some states are on record as saying they won't recognize gay marriages, even if they recognize heterosexual marriages from the same jurisdiction.

Since gay marriages are official legal matters here in Canada, dissolution of a gay marriage is just like a heterosexual one, and we do indeed have gay divorces now.
