Cincinnati is a-brewin' today with the news that my boss's boss's boss's boss's boss - our president Nancy Zimpher - has given an ultimatum to our basketball coach - Bob Huggins: Resign or be fired. (linkage may be slow)
Sponsors are pulling out. Fans and alumni are vowing never to attend another game. Nick Lachey is furious.
My opinion: C-ya, Bob.
It's an unpopular opinion, so I'm not exactly shouting it from the hilltops. But I think he's had his run and it's time to move on. Nothing lasts forever, and he has been the coach here for 16 years. That's a pretty darned good run for a college basketball coach.
Nancy's position is that we are raising the standards, and it's no longer acceptable that our coach (the winningist coach in our history) has a DUI record. That his players are in the news every year for thuggery. That he has an anger-management issue. He's not a good role model. And it's high time we accept that, and try to do better.
It's not gonna be easy. I'm with the masses in thinking that Bob Huggins IS the basketball program here. And the program pretty much defines who we are. It has for a LONG time. It's the reason many kids attend the school!
But it's time for a change. And as we all know, my city doesn't deal with change very well!
