“C’mon, Wallace, it’s just one teeny-tiny little favor.”
“Nope, not gonna do it.”
Veronica sighed heavily and looked over at her best friend. They had been sitting in her living room, supposedly studying for their history exam when she’d asked him for the favor. She couldn’t believe he was turning her down. He’d always done what she’d asked before.
“Look, it’s really not that bad. All you have to do is break into the principal’s office and…”
“Why can’t you do it?” he broke in.
“Because you’re the one who’s an office aide, so it’s not going to look suspicious if you’re in there. Plus you know if Clemmons sees me, he’s going to think I’m up to no good.”
“That’s because you are up to no good. You don’t need to break into Morehead’s office to steal some kid’s record.”
“Ahh, but I do,” she said. “It’s the only way I can prove the kid’s not as perfect as he says he is. So please can you do this one little favor for me?”
Wallace shook his head. “No. If I get caught, I get suspended, simple as that.”
“But you won’t get caught.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do. C’mon, Wallace, like I said, this is just a little favor. It’s cake.”
“I’m tired of doing you favors,” he said. “You’ll have to find someone else to do your dirty work for you.”
Her mouth dropped open. “It’s not like I’m always asking you to do favors for me.”
“Yes, you do. That’s our whole friendship right there, you asking me for favors, and me doing them. Well, not anymore.”
She sat silently for a minute. “You never said anything before.”
“Maybe because it didn’t bother me so much before. But now it does.” He stood up and started gathering his books together. “If you just want somebody to do your little favors for you, you’ll have to find a new ‘friend’. I quit.” He walked out the door.
Veronica sat in stunned silence, wondering where all that had come from. She didn’t think she’d asked him for that many favors since they’d become friends. She didn’t know what his problem was, but she knew one thing for sure: she didn’t want to lose him as a friend. Even if he couldn’t do favors for her anymore, she still wanted him as her friend.
She jumped up and ran out the door, where she could see him heading to the parking lot behind her building.
“Hey,” she said after she’d run to catch up to him. “You’re right. I have been taking advantage of our friendship and I’m sorry.”
“Really?” he asked, looking at her skeptically.
“Really,” she repeated. “And you don’t have to worry about me asking you for favors anymore. But I do still want us to be friends, though. If you still want to.”
He smiled. “Yeah, I do. And I don’t mind doing favors for you, I just don’t like doing them all the time.”
She grinned back at him. “I’ll keep that in mind. So are you going to come back in or what? The Yankees game is coming on in a couple minutes and I need a friend to help me cheer them on.”
“Yeah, I think I can help you do that,” he said, and they headed back into her apartment.
