...No, I am not writing DS9 fic. There is nothing to see here. *shifty eyes* I'm up to season 4, and simply enjoying the heck out of it.

When Garak first hears of Ziyal, he feels something like pity for the girl. It is much the sentiment he felt for the Cardassian orphans left behind on Bajor, though flavored a bit by his delight at Dukat's imminent downfall.

Oh, he saw how Dukat looked at Major Kira. He simply hadn't realized how deep the gul's predilictions ran, or how sordid. He idly wonders if they'll strip Dukat of his rank or simply send him away from the homeworld, out of sight and out of mind.

Garak can hear the faint wonder in Major Kira's voice as she describes her little misadventure with Dukat. Garak quells the urge to destroy her temporary good-will toward Dukat and Cardassia itself, to banish that hint of optimism. After all, Garak knows very well the homecoming Dukat and his half-Bajoran progeny will receive, how Dukat's wife and seven children will react to a sister with a mixture of Cardassian and Bajoran features, and a Bajoran surname.

For all that family is everything to Cardassians, Garak knows they are not so sentimental when it comes to illegitimate offspring.

Really, he does pity Ziyal, in the end, as her father's sins and indiscretions fall upon her head.

star trek, fic
