They don't know what they're in for at Spence, getting me, a ghost of a girl who'll nod and smile and take her tea but who isn't really there.
And my Gemma Doyle Trilogy obsession deepens. You know I love something when I make a fanmix for it. I finished The Sweet Far Thing today and while I LOVED it and thought it was actually a great ending, it

Oh man, the amazing relationship that is Gemma and Kartik.
I loved their relationship, and how it grew over the course of the trilogy rather than being right up in your face from page 1. And one of the reasons it grew was Gemma growing and coming into her own ON her own. I'm so glad you found THE_EPIC in these two...I love them so much. One of my fave ships ever.
And then he actually DIED. I did not expect that and it makes me want to write emo poetry about their EPICNESS! *sobs* It's really awful when your mother asks you why you look so sad all day and you make up these little lies because you don't want to admit it's all about the death of a fictional character.
At least he didn't fully die though...that his spirit went into the tree was at least some comfort to me. But to this day there have only been two times where I was really crushed/depressed for days after the death of character in a book, and this was one of them. So you aren't alone bb!
P.S.: After all that I thought 'well, at least there the internetz with its fandoms... which means I'll find lots of fanfic, famixes etc...' But... NO. WHERE IS IT?!
I have no freaking clue. I was SHOCKED that there wasn't a bigger fan base. These are so fantastic, and to think that teh suck of Twilight has more attention makes me pissed.
Coming up next: FEE/PIPPA
YAY! I loved Fee/Pippa. Their relationship/friendship was pretty subtle, even from the beginning.
Also? I'm obsessed with the name Pippa since reading these books.

I had this song stuck in my head while reading the third book. I HAD to include it.
And one of the reasons it grew was Gemma growing and coming into her own ON her own.
YES YES YES! SO TRUE! One of the reasons why I loved the books so much was the different forms of character growth in general. The developments and stages. Because these books could've been awful in the hands of a bad writer, but she managed to make them AMAZING. And Gemma/Kartik is so damn awesome because they're not just OMGZTRUELOVEFOREVER the whole time.
At least he didn't fully die though...that his spirit went into the tree was at least some comfort to me.
Yeah, but... couldn't it have been something... IDK... maybe a dog or something? (Though, I just realized that would've been ten times worse, really mean and WEEEEEEEIRD.) At first I was just so 'A TREE?! SERIOUSLY?! A T-R-E-E??!!'
But to this day there have only been two times where I was really crushed/depressed for days after the death of character in a book, and this was one of them.
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one. Also, SAME HERE. I cried so much after reading The Time Traveller's Wife. DON'T LAUGH! It was INTENSE.
These are so fantastic, and to think that teh suck of Twilight has more attention makes me pissed.
I JUST DON'T GET IT! I mean, okay, Twilight fandom is BIG. Fine. But how can THIS be so ignored? Why aren't there tons of shipper comms? (NO GEMMA/KARTIK COMM?? REALLY, FANDOM, REALLY??) Discussions? Picspams of a possible DREAM CAST? FIX-IT fanfic? WHAT IS GOING ON?!
Their relationship/friendship was pretty subtle, even from the beginning.
I absolutely LOVE how this was handled. And how the characters changed and grew. Btw, I also love how the friendship was done in general. It wasn't just BFF4LYFE! They were selfish and jealous and kinda annoying each other from time to time. And it WORKED because that's realistic.
Also, Pippa is a great name.

Definitely. The premise had SO many little parts (Indian culture, feminism at the turn of the century, magic, secret societies, parallel worlds with their own peoples/cultures, etc) and mashing those all together could have come out really disjointed, but she managed to weave them together so perfectly. PLUS she dealt with two generations; you're dealing with trying to figure out her mother's and Circe's past and present motives during the entire trilogy.
Gemma/Kartik is so damn awesome because they're not just OMGZTRUELOVEFOREVER the whole time.
This was so refreshing. They were both being influenced by external forces; Kartik by the Rak'shana and Gemma by her family, her friends, and the magic, and so their alliance and feelings for each other had to deepen despite all that, which made you really root for them rather than get bored/annoyed. Not that I've thought about this much...o_O
(NO GEMMA/KARTIK COMM?? REALLY, FANDOM, REALLY??
I know...I feel it is my personal responsibility to spread the obsession with these books. Because people do not know what they're missing out on.
SERIOUSLY?! A T-R-E-E??!!
Obviously you don't love trees as much as I do. Ask mojotastic sometime about my fondness for them. So when his spirit went into the tree I was like "omgs tragic and AMAZING." Not that I didn't cry and carry on for days.

I agreeeee. Their friendship was so realistic, much more so than a lot I've read, because so often in books you get these kind of shallow friendships that are taken for granted and never tested because the author pays attention to the main romance, and you never see them with their little annoyances and fights like you do in this book, where you have the Fee/Pippa friendship and how Gemma and Ann get incorporated into that.
BTW!!!!!!!!! IF you aren't already LJ friends with Libba Bray libba_bray, GO FRIEND HER NOW!! OMG SHE SPEAKS INTERNETZ AND IS LOLARIOUS.
