Surprisingly simple - put some dye into some water, add one part water to four parts gasoline, shake well, allow to sit overnight and next day the ethanol will be absorbed into the water, at which point you can then separate the two for ethanol free gasoline.

But why do this?

Maybe you've got more time than money as around here, the ethanol free gasoline is about a buck a gallon more expensive, otherwise, this is really just something to know for an emergency situation.

Why would you want/need ethanol free gasoline though?

As he outlines in the video, ethanol does a number on plastic and rubber, meaning it will dissolve hoses, gaskets, seals and other things which you don't want dissolving in your generator, your gasoline powered tools and your boat.

Another big thing he forgot to mention is that ethanol is hydroscopic, meaning it loves water - hence the reason you can separate it from gas using water - and will suck it from the air into your fuel.

Not only does this water down the fuel over time, but even worse, it can rust internal parts of your stuff, which is bad of course.

As he also demonstrates, this trick can be used to determine how much ethanol is in a given sample of gasoline in case that's important to you for whatever reason.

Still, it's handy info to have just in case, plus, it could serve as a science project for a kid in your life, so enjoy the knowledge which has been shared.
