Ian update

Ian had his 2-week checkup today (even though he's not two weeks old yet; he's actually only 10 days old). He's already grown an inch (and has outgrown the first of his 0-3 month footed sleepers, to boot!) and is up to 9 lbs, 7 oz, so already over his birth weight.

We had to go over to the hospital after his checkup so he could get his blood drawn for his second "newborn screen" (the first was done before we left the hospital), and THAT was rather a disaster. Basically, they stick his heel and then he is supposed to bleed onto a card, and fill up 5 circles on the card completely with blood. After the screen, we sat around for about 10 minutes so I could nurse him to help him calm down after the traumatic experience, and just as we had packed everything up and were walking toward the exit, one of the lab techs stopped us and said that the circles on the card had not been completely filled in, and that the card would likely be rejected. Our options were to let them send it off and see if it was accepted or rejected, and likely have to come back on a subsequent date to redo the blood draw....or just let them redo it before we left. So Ian got to have his OTHER heel pricked and the blood draw repeated, which none of us liked at all. But it was better than coming back another day, especially since my mom is here right now and was at home with Corwin, which might not be the case for a subsequent test.

Ian is a much better sleeper than Corwin was, fairly consistently sleeping anywhere from 2.5 to 4 hours at a stretch at night. Corwin never slept more than 3 hours at a stretch for months, so I'm feeling rather spoiled. Ian is also sleeping a lot of the day away, but tends to be awake in the afternoon, except on days like today, when he had a stressful morning and slept all afternoon to make up for it. He's awake this evening (currently sitting with his grandma), so I'm hoping I'll be able to nurse him around 10:00 and go to sleep after that, but we'll see.

Ian's also just pretty laid back in general. He doesn't fuss or cry much; most of his fussing occurs when he's having a difficult time pooping. He doesn't really cry when he's hungry. Of course, I'm pretty good at reading and responding to his rooting cues, but Ian never really gets to fussing about being hungry, while I remember Corwin fussing about that a lot.

My mom is staying with us this week and next week, and having her around is helping a lot with the juggling of two kids. Andrew has also been at home for the last two weeks, but he goes back to work on Monday. It's gonna be a new adjustment next week not having him around. I'll get less sleep, as this week I've been able to sleep in some while Andrew has taken Corwin to his morning destinations. Even though Ian is doing pretty well at figuring out this sleeping at night thing, I'm still having to get up 2-3 times in the middle of the night for approximately 30 minutes each time (and occasionally longer than that if Ian has trouble going back to sleep or poops repeatedly), so it's been nice to not have to get up at 7 or 7:30 a.m. to get myself and the boys ready to be somewhere by 9 (especially as Ian will happily sleep 'til 10 or 11 if left alone). But once Andrew's not here to get Corwin ready to go and chauffeur him around, I'll have to get up even though I'll really want more sleep. I'm guessing I'll have to train Corwin to allow me to take a nap at some point during the day. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. :)
