Ten years ago, I never would have thought that our beliefs would become so reversed. I was a devout Christian back then--I even tried to convert some of my friends who weren't already immersed in the path of righteousness. (Independent of any connection to religion:) I think we all want to feel that something or someone is looking out for us, that it will be good in the end, no matter what manner of idiocy or lucklessness we manage to engage in or that manages to engage us.

A prayerbook I saw recently reads, "Pray as if everything depended on God. Act as if everything depended on you."
