Highgate Cemetery

Feb 23, 2010 19:49

Had a very nice weekend, enjoying the amazing weather on Saturday. I ended up going to Highgate Cemetery with gnine and her parents who were visiting for the week. Highgate is exactly the kind of creepy, run-down, and overgrown cemetery that I love. It's the inspiration behind Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book and has quite a few famous people buried there, including Karl Marx. It's also the source of a somewhat dubious modern vampire tale. The cemetery is divided into two sections, the East and the West. The West part of the cemetery is older and you have to go through with a tour group. This kind of limited my picture taking because I kept having to run to catch up with the tour group. I would love to go back and have more time to thoroughly explore the Western half without supervision.

A not so great picture of an area called The Lebanon Circle, which actually looks more like this.

And on to the East Cemetery! This section had a mixture of older and more modern graves.
