I have two thoughts. The expiring offer is a a classic move that recruiters try to press on to first time job seekers, typically new grads, but you may qualify.. (Almost) no company worth its salt is going to withdraw its offer just because you ask for more time. If anything, they'll want you more because you're clearly in demand. If there's heavy competition for the job you're offering it might be different, but if you're really their first choice, then asking for another week or two isn't going to hurt your chances. Unless you've already stretched that rope some, then they might be fed up with you.

On the PSEG job, the behavior of the junior guy may well be indicative of their corporate culture. Or the guy could just be a dick, you never can tell for sure. My opinion on evaluating companies in this situation is to weight people inversely proportionately with their "rank" - if the janitors and secretaries seem happy, chances are management is good and will treat you well and the guy is probably an anomoly. Suck it up and blather. If you don't have questions, make statements about how you would fit in or relate something you see to your past experience. OTOH, if everyone else seemed pretty blah, then you may end up like the shiny corn kernel in the turd.

Slightly shadier, but still OK in my book as long as you'd be OK taking it, would be to accept the protopower job and withdraw if PSEG came through. Unless you /have/ to take a job, for financial or whatever reason, my feeling is go for the one you want most.

And also, NJ sucks. All of it. :) So PSEG better be damn peachy.
