Romeo + Juliette
pre-debut Jessica/Onew
G; General, Romance, Bonding
In which Jessica and Jinki are on the same brainwave.
They broke up on- well, Jinki doesn’t exactly remember and he’s even more embarrassed because did he really care so little? She was important, had been and must have been once because Jinki remembers skipping math class and sneaking out of his bedroom window at night to see her and anyone who knows their shit will tell you that Lee Jinki worships three things- school, family and music.
But that still doesn't mean he remembers so he lowers his head and mumbles a made-up answer to Jonghyun's question, thankful for once that everyone's attention slides from him quickly. Instead, all eyes are fixed on Jonghyun, who has begun what Jinki is sure will be a very Sad and Heartbreaking (and Drunk) Soliloquy about his Ex and Lying Girl Punk Singers and Sneaky Drum Players.
He closes his eyes and her image floats on the back of his eyelids and he feels sick; his stomach flip flops in a half-hearted kind of way and he opens his eyes, swallowing uncomfortably. He gets up and attempts to extricate himself from the circle of trainees, sprawled across the floor of the living room, actually making it out without killing anyone or himeself before Stephanie wails "Jinki-aaaaaaaah," and ruins his stealthy escape.
"Drink," he calls over his shoulder and manages to trip over a plastic cup then winces when she replies "Oh, me too!" But thankfully someone is already telling her, "No, Tiff, I will get Jinki his drink since I'm sure he wants to be able to dance properly tomorrow and you will stay here to avoid any more awkward questions from the instructor tomorrow," He turns around to see Jessica picking her way out of the human pile, whose drunken attention is already back on Jonghyun now talking about two people named Sid and Nancy (whose names Jinki also thinks sound remotely non-Korean, but Hyun is talking about them breaking up in a seedy noraebang in Apkujong, so what does he know?)
Wordlessly, she beckons him to follow her and they make their way to the kitchen in silence. "Juice? Cola? Or beer?" She turns from perusing the contents of the countertop to arch an eyebrow at him and he's pretty sure he's not imagining the disapproval in her voice when she utters the last word.
He's not really thirsty anyway, but anything to prevent going back to the messy living room, back to her. "Just water is fine," He offers her a weak smile and stands by uncertainly as she produces a mug from the cupboard and reaches for a filled glass pitcher labelled 'Sica' in large, looping English handwriting. Then screams and sobs erupt from the living room and she starts, seems to think twice, and lifts the lid to sniff the contents of the jug. Screwing up her face in disgust, she takes a plastic jug out of another drawer and begins to transfer the contents, shaking her head. "Vodka," she mutters, jerking her head in the direction of the noise.
"Fany must have thought I'd drink it by mistake or something. Be right back," She exits the kitchen and returns quickly sand pitcher. Now it's his turn to raise an eyebrow and she shrugs while rummaging around "If the idiots want to drink themselves into a drunken oblivion, it's not my problem," Tossing him a water bottle, she says, "Best to be safe," and slams the door hard, glaring at the glass bottles and candy littering the countertop. "Thanks," is all he says and he quickly opens the bottle and drinks nervously as her gaze flicks over him. She nods a welcome and they both stand there for a while like that until someone else yells "More drinks!" and she shoots a really dirty look towards it.
"Come on, we'd better get out of here before they come in and ask me to play bartender,"
He really has nothing better to do (or think about), so he follows her until she stops short and he does too, because there's a dizzying view of night-time Seoul right through the glass doors. Then, he follows her out onto the balcony anyway, because she's calm and certain and everything he's not (and wasn't).
Eunah used to say how there's a person behind each light out there and remembering her voice on that night really doesn't help.
"Wanna tell me about it?" Jessica joins him by the railing and shoots him a curious sideways look. "Or not, if you don't want to," Her voice is peaceful, quiet, non-demanding so he's already shaking his head and he talks about her, her name, her favorite colour, how they met, their virst date. He paints a whirlwind of pictures from memory until he can't remember anything else except for that stupid day he left her and he stops abruptly, awkwardly. "And then..." She looks at him and he doesn't have to continue because she knows what happened.
But that makes him continue anyway because he feels a strong need to justify what happened to this girl he doesn't really know on a balcony at 2 in the morning while they watch the city sleep. "It wasn't that...she didn't matter..." He struggles to say what he wants, sifting through memories in his mind trying to find the right words, wincing as each one cuts at him a little bit. "She did," he says, because she did. It's just that somewhere alongg the way, she stopped or he stopped, he doesn't really know anymore.
"But then she didn't," Jessica supplies and he stares at her without bothering to disguise his shock because she's thinking the exact same thing as he is and she's not supposed to know how it feels. "And you couldn't explain it because there were times where you were pretty sure it was love but then you saw more of the world and found out it wasn't. And then you realized you-"
"Didn't care," Jinki whispers, finishing her sentence and she flashes him a crooked smile before gazing out into the dark again. "Don't look so surprised, Jinki-ah. Others feel too, even me, you know," He opens his mouth to say no, it wasn't that, just, how did you know but she continues anyway, voice sharpening ever so slightly and he realizes he's not the only one who needed to talk tonight. "You've heard my nickname, heard the stories, haven't you? I guess you understand too. Ice princess," She laughs ironically before hunching her shoulders and bows her head to toss a curtain of hair over her face.
"Well," he says slowly and she stiffens. "An ice princess needs an ice prince too, right?" She gives him the oddest look and he's sure he's said something wrong again, but instead she smiles and he grins back. Then they're doubled over in laughter and they're lying on the deck chairs when Jessica starts telling him about the people with that weird lamp across the street and he realizes she's making it up as she goes along. So he only interrupts to laugh as he watches her talk, pale hands sketching out pictures across the night sky.
Jessica stares at Minho (Cold heart, baby! Cold eyes, baby!) and then Key (The ice princess has arrived!) then fights not to laugh because Jinki winks at her when Jonghyun and Taemin go Don't give me that ice princess look; her members look at her strangely. Then they're coming off the stage, and Jinki's eyes are full of laughter and his hands are up in a don't kill me kind of way. She promptly decides to ignore Tiffany and Jonghyun spazzing by her side
(For some reason, hyung really wanted this to be the title song even though I told him SHINee World would be better- Don't even, oppa, you have no idea how stupid it sounds in English)
"You're weird," she announces.
"I know," he says, laughing, and she laughs along.
