Warning: there's another post on this topic coming. Then I might be done? IDK, we'll see.

Something I think I should clarify -- promisethstars's portrayal of Gabe in her Big Bang story was not, as I recall, a portrayal of a Jew who'd converted to Catholicism. I have absolutely no problem with conversion. As it says right in my profile, I'm a convert myself -- I was raised Protestant and am now Jewish. There are a lot of valid reasons to convert, and I'm personally acquainted with many of them.

That's not what this story was. Here, of course, is where it becomes a problem that it's been privatized, because of course you all just have to take my word for it, unless someone has screencaps. This wasn't Gabe Saporta converts to Catholicism -- it was an erasure of his Jewish identity and replacing it with a Catholic one. It was, for want of a better word, a whitewashing.

(And, okay, granted, if you're trying to find someone in bandom who's going to become a priest and talk people off in a confessional, I could see how Gabe Saporta would be a pretty logical choice...except for that whole Jewish thing. The thing is that for me, and a lot of other people, that's a pretty big "except".)

I've also seen several attempts to draw the never-ending debate about whether or not RPF is okay into the comments. Fortunately, this seems to be dying down, but if it continues, I will probably start freezing threads. I have complicated and eternally-changing feelings on the subject of RPF, but I have less than no interest in getting into the debate on whether or not it's ~okay~.

Finally, because I can't believe I actually had to say it in this discussion, of all places: anyone who presumes to know my feelings on rape and/or sexual abuse will be banned from my journal.

After extensive discussion with a couple of people, the original post, and subsequent related ones, will from here on out have anonymous comments screened by default; either use OpenID or sign your comment with your LJ handle to have it unscreened.
