"This objectification of women has to stop!" "It's just Mom and whores."

So today in our progress through SPN, we hit "Malleus Malleficarum". I'd heard some bad things about that one before, so I was kind of bracing myself, but WOW. That's, what, five dead women, no dead men, and...I don't even know how many misogynist slurs. Plus a couple of ablist slurs thrown in to boot! apocalypsos noted that in S3, one of the Winchesters refers to a woman with a pejorative eighteen times in sixteen episodes and it felt like half of those were in this one alone, plus the bonus of "shortbus".

Ugh, see, this is why I am so deeply conflicted about it and resisted for so long: there are so many things that are right up my fannish alley, and that my friends pointed out a lot in trying to pimp the show to me (and they were totally right; burntcopper called back around the time S1 started airing in the UK that I would like the American folklore aspect, and IDK how many people told me about Dean's epic Oldest Sibling Angst, plus there was the awesome soundtrack), but then I would turn around and there's that awful, awful way that the show, and the majority of its fans, treat women. The ambivalence just gets worse and worse the more I start to genuinely enjoy a lot of it.

("Stop calling me 'bitch'" would be an awesome tee-shirt for fans of the women on the show, though, or tagline for some kind of ~campaign~ a la Project Girl Wonder. Too bad this is going to be the last season so it's probably largely too late to affect anything.)

Then we watched the dream episode and mostly all I have to say about that is that if that scene with the two Deans wasn't originally written as John and Dean and they changed it when they couldn't get JDM back, I'll eat my shoe.

Ugh, I have to go get a haircut. Possibly the shampooing will help wash away how gross I feel after watching MM.
