My Farscape Post

Apr 16, 2009 11:02

I was going to jot down a few thoughts on sebaceanbabe's birthday post, but it got...longer than I was anticipating. It's a bit rambly and all over the place, I apologize for that, since I have to flee to pick up my pops at the airport in a few, so he can come visit with my boys, who have a full schedule of baseball and soccer, which they wanted to show off. Of course, it's now supposed to snow 6-10 inches through Saturday, so...thanks for coming, pops!

Okay, so I’ve now watched through the 2-parter (19 &20?) of Season One of Farscape and I have to admit that I do a lot of it semi-distracted, which is how I watch television on the computer. I’m contemplating doing Season Two on disc and forcing myself into the basement and the big t.v. with no distractions.

That said, I am liking it a lot, despite the Muppets.

I like the general premise and that Chricton isn’t a soldier or a badass, he’s just an IASA astronaut, who’s thrust into this bizarre different universe and in the worst possible way, taking out Crais’ brother, completely by accident and instantly becomes both known and hunted, not to mention he gets mixed up with a bunch of escaped prisoners from the get-go.

I like how he also doesn’t instantly evolve into a badass. He’s kinda bumbling around at first, totally a fish out of water, and much more of a hindrance than an asset, much to the annoyance of, well, pretty much everyone, but D’Argo in particular.

I liked how, in "PK Tech Girl," he actually found a way to be useful, in that what needed to be done was something he was at least semi-qualified to do. Plus, I like Gilina both times we meet her. It sucks that she had to die, but it would have been horribly awkward had she lived.

I like how the group has gone from open animosity to barely tolerating each other to actual affection (and more). They’re no longer only interested in saving their own skins and using each other to do so. It's touching to see. Yes, Crichton and Aeryn. But also in "Human Reaction" (was it?) with fake Earth and Crichton's relief that Rygel wasn't dead and D’Argo, so sweet with holding Aeryn’s hand and making sure that she wasn't going to die alone. And who’s now calling Crichton “John!”

I have to admit, I’m not a huge Zhaan fan. I just have a natural aversion on painted aliens. Which is why I’m not a huge Chiara fan, either. She just bugs, with the creepy voice and the weird inflections and the bizarre head movements and the heinous outfit. I’ve only just met her, so I suppose there’s still hope, but I’m not feeling her quite yet.

On the same lines, that’s probably why I found the whole “commune” episode with Zhaan’s people most insufferable. Even with the melding or what-you-ma-call-it with Crichton.

Though I kind of hated the ridiculous dog-the-bounty hunters as characters, I kind of liked that episode, if only because it’s the first time I saw (or it registered) Crichton be kind of proactively badass, what with the top-dog act and all. It was surprisingly hot. I like how he gets proactive with becoming useful with other things too, now that he has to deal with this being his life for whoever knows how long (e.g., learning to fly the Prowler).

I really liked the “Human Reaction” episode. For John showing his love towards his shipmates and getting his damn heart broken by his “dad” and, well, mostly, looking hot while walking around in jeans and other “earth wear.” And I kind of liked that though it was horribly manipulative and cruel for the aliens to have done what they did...you can kind of get behind the idea. They needed to know exactly how humans would react to an alien "invasion" as they only have one chance to find a home and it's just kind of heartbreaking for everyone involved.

For some reason I get a kick out of Crichton when he pretends to be a PK. He's all "authoritarian" and downright hot in the uniform, and I don’t even like leather. I like how Crichton’s no longer a liability and how it was a natural progression, from being just clueless and lost to now having been out there for however long and having to learn and adapt and be clever and loyal and fire weapons, even (and yes, you can totally see the beginnings of the making of the cr...) or be all with the deaded.

Speaking of the making of the cr...Scorpious is an awesome villain. I love how he instantly out-badassed Crais, the second they appeared on screen together. And I semi-like how they gave Crais a backstory and a reason why he’d be so resolutely “KILL” on Crichton’s ass with the death of his brother, even though I'm not particularly (or at all) sympathetic to his character.

I love Crichton’s random pop culture references and the way everyone else just ignores them.

But mostly, I love, love, love how when things are at the absolute worst for Crichton and someone piles it on just a bit more, his reaction is to laugh entirely inappropriately. It’s awesome and endearing and it's just...so much better than the alternative. You know? The 1000 yard stare, the weepy eyes, and the meanest, least sympathetic, jackassy retort possible, ahem, SARAH (that one’s for you, sebaceanbabe, plus yesterday was hard, I was due). But seriously, the giggle is awesome!

I loved the 2-parter for all the obvious (for me!) reasons. The torture. Crichton undercover as a fake PK (though how that “accent” how they don’t expose him immediately is beyond me, Crichton, sir, you are no Michael Westen). The torture. Crichton's patented laugh, when he sees Crais has arrived in the middle of all that torture, because (of course!) he would. Gilina! And Gilina saving them all (even Aeryn), even though it means losing her true love to another PK, and she totally knew that when she rejoined them, despite (or because of) Crichton's non-answer. The torture. Stark and John bonding in the cell, the comfort scene and most of all their total giggle-fest over Crichton's “kissed a girl” comment in the middle of battle.

So, anyway. I'm in and liking it a lot and looking forward to finishing up this season and moving on to the next (even with some reported weak episodes that'll greet me at the beginning there).

Am I missing anything huge?
