Follow Up: The landlord's story...

Nov 04, 2010 08:35

See my last post for what I found at my home Tuesday night. In general, he apologized all over the place. He admits to a clusterfuck. The door open was forgetfulness after a messed up day. The dirtied-up laundry he claims was an accident. The bread he claims was an old plumber's trick to sop up water in the pipes so you can weld copper pipe. That last part is apparently true, as I found many references on the web. Copper solder, and the pipe itself, need to be very hot to melt the solder. Even a tiny trickle of water can cool the metal enough to make a poor solder joint, which will leak. The old trick is to use the soft center in a slice of bread, and jam it into the pipe. The bread will absorb the water and let you solder the copper piping. The bread will break down enough when the water is turned back on, and will just flow out the faucets.

At no time did he give keys to the plumber, the landlord was there the whole time. This was my biggest fear, that he gave a third party free access to my apartment and keys without supervision. Yet this still doesn't explain why he didn't call me at any time. Had he called, I would have given permission to enter my apartment AND to use the bread. But he didn't ask, and that is the bad part. I asked him why he didn't call at any time, and he couldn't give a reason. He offered to reimburse me for the bread, but it's too late for that.

Time to look for a new apartment. I'll have a hard time of it actually, trying to find a place that will take 4 cats and lets me do car work in my parking area. But I'm going to start looking anyway.
