gardening day

Well, the sun came out today and I was able to do some garden work. I weeded, pulling both the shot-weed that is currently earning it's name, and some large spiky weeds that have taken advantage of green cover and rain. One I pulled out was about as big around as a standard flashlight and was hiding underneath my holly bush. Fortunately my rose and butterfly bush border is filled with multiplying hollyhock, yarrow, and lupine that there's very little space for weeds (though there was some). My fennel is about a foot high and bushy, one of my peonies is waist-high, and my lone unblooming rhody out back is showing signs of red on the buds - ready to bloom out. There are blue blooms out there from both lithodora and ajuga, plus red color on my japanese maple leaves and my pieris (which I had almost given up on. Unfortunately the lamium has run wild and is reaching into the neighbor's yards, so I had to yank up a lot of that around the fences and I am pooped. But I got exercise and I love seeing how things have grown.
