Defiance (2008)

Another movie based on a true story and from a book by Nechama Tec, Defiance: The Bielski Partisans.

In summary the family of the Bielski brothers are killed by Germans. The four of them retreat into a forest. Soon they find other Jewish refugees, and Tuvia, the oldest brother, assumes leadership and creates a camp. Zus, the second oldest, is thirsty for revenge and wants to kill those bastard Germans so a group of his friends and him dissent from the camp now called the Bielski Otriad and join the nearby Russians as soldiers. Asael, the third oldest, comes of age throughout the movie, overcoming his fear of killing, finding love (played by Mia Wasikowska, Alice in Wonderland (2010) yay!), and eventually (set after the movie period) joining the army and is killed in action. The youngest brother Aron is only in a few scenes and is almost as silent as Mordred. I wish the producers expounded more on him, see! He's not even in the poster! :[

At some point, Germans discover the camp, so Tuvia gathers up everyone and they abandon it, relocating and building a new camp. This movie is really all about Tuvia and his transformation from the brother who left his family to live in the city into an authoritarian leader who holds the lives of thousands in his hands. Obviously, he undergoes quite a bit of stress, but not to worry because his forest wife (real one being dead) comforts him. In the climax of the movie, Tuvia learns that the Germans are surrounding the forest and plan an assault on Passover. Zus also leanrs of this by the Russians who are retreating and sacrificing the Bielski Otriad for their own safety. The day before Passover, fighter planes drop bombs onto the camp, and Tuvia leaves an escape while Asrael stays behind with fighters to delay the German advance. The camp reaches the end of the forest only to meet miles of open swampland. Tuvia doesn't know what to do, and as people yell at him to either wait for the others or to leave them behind, he crouches down and starts to shake. Thank God that Asael returns (alone I think) and says that they will cross the swampland. "There is no Moses to part these waters, so we will do it ourselves." With everyone's belts, they make this giant snake thing and trudge through the water. When they make it, they all catch their breaths on the hillside. Unfortunately a German tank with some infantry discovers them and releases fire. Tuvia and his intellectual friend (Issac?), whom I love for his Roosevelt has no mustache comment when debating with a schoolteacher about world powers, sneak in from behind and kill a few off before they are spotted. Issac then decides to pull out a grenade and instead of throwing it at the tank like a good soldier, he takes it and runs, exploding a few yards away. Intellectual people and their aim. Sigh. When this is all looking hopeless, Zus and his band of warriors bust in and wipe the Germans out. Heartwarming brotherly reunion ensues and movie ends with the camp walking into a forest.

The Bielski brothers saved 12,000 lives by camping at various spots throughout the forest until the end of WWII. How awesome is that?

I skipped tons of stuff; this movie is so crammed with information, but that's the gist of it.

Oh, and there was a forest romance between Zus and Bella:

[Zus sitting stoically along and brooding. Bella comes in and joins him.]
Bella: Why don't the women have guns?
Me: YES. GIVE THE WOMEN WEAPONS. GO BELLA.
Zus: [gives Bella strange look.]
Bella: The women need protection.
Me: WEAPONS. AHAHA. GO BELLA.
Zus: The women have men for protection.
Me: Bella! You tell that man off! he ain't got no right to be talking smack to you!
Bella: I need protection.
Me: WTF?
Bella: [takes Zus' hand and places it under her coat and on top of her breast.]
Me: WTFWTFWTF?

Tuvia eventually armed the women.

Seriously though, this movie was great. It made you question whether or not you had to lose humanity to protect humanity. I saw that Tuvia took the leadership position because he didn't want anyone else to make the decisions he had too. Do you have to sacrifice something to gain freedom? The camp was a socialist environment where everyone got equal food, equal shelter and this caused problems for the fighters who risked their lives for the camp. It was aaaawesome because Tuvia was all, stfu, equal portions. And fighters were all, no! Fuck you! And Tuvia's like, bang, bang, the instigator's dead so get back to work, fuckers. And everyone's like, wtf. OKAY. SO IT WAS A LOT COOLER THAN THAT. BUT THE IMPLIED QUESTIONS, OMG. DID TUVIA DEVELOP AN OVERSIZED EGO? IS THIS WHY SOCIALISM DOESN'T WORK IN PRACTICALITY? OR DOES SOCIALISM ACTUALLY WORK, JUST NOT IN STRESSED CIRCUMSTANCES? FLAIL.

LET'S HAVE PICTURES BECAUSE THERE WAS ADORABLE BIELSKIEST MOMENTS. YEEEES.
