Maybe two is really better than one,
cause maybe it’s true, that i can’t live without you
“...Perhaps the both of us are really just not for each other...”
Key looked scandalized, his face a picture of shock and slight denial. Onew shuffled his feet nervously, his fingers plucking at the hem of his jacket.
It had been a tough decision to make, seeing how he and Key had been together for six months. But Onew was at a loss. Maybe Key wasn’t the right one for him.
To compare the both of them together, it was really obvious that the both of them really were polar opposites. And both he and Key were quarrelling half of the time. Onew couldn’t really take it Key’s bossy attitude any longer.
But it had been six months. Was it really wise of him to leave this relationship now? Onew didn’t muse over this for just one night. It had been days.
Hopefully, this decision of his wouldn’t fail him.
Now, he just hoped that Key would take this in a calm matter. Known for his short temper, god knows if Onew would return alive in one piece to his apartment. Key would usually bit his lips, counting mentally to ten.
But that didn’t work... or at least, it didn’t work most of the time.
Key would then end up screaming in frustration before words unknown to Onew would spew out. Onew squeezed his eyes shut, mentally preparing himself for his ears to deafen.
A second passed.
And another second passed.
...?
Why wasn’t there any noise at all?
Onew opened his eyes slowly, and the sight before him shocked him.
Key wasn’t angry; neither was he biting his lips mentally counting to ten. Instead, there was liquid coming out from Key’s beautiful eyes. But there wasn’t any sound at all. No sounds of sniffing, sobbing or loud wailing.
Just silent tears, while Key stood there, the cold wind blowing at him and messing up his multi colour hair. His beautiful multi colour hair that Onew had adored so much. Onew’s heart had frozen, as he felt the blood within his veins turn cold.
Desperation arose in Onew suddenly, as though he needed to explain his actions to Key. But just as he opened his mouth, Key lifted his hand up, cutting Onew off. “...You...really...mean it?” Even Key’s voice sounded foreign to him.
Gone was the strong, prideful and smooth baritone, but a broken and pitiful whimper.
Onew hesitated. But it was either now, or never.
“Y-Yes, bu-“
Again, Key cut him off from his weak reasoning, his voice raspy from the effort of holding his emotions back along with the cold air. Tears kept licking the other male’s cheekbones, sliding off his face and wetting the collar of his coat.
“Then... I wish you happiness soon.” Key’s eyes looked distant, as he murmured those words and bowed down ninety degrees.
Before Onew could register what had happened, Key straightened his back again. With a swing of his head, Key had turned his body, walking away. Something was nagging Onew, to grab Key’s hand, to assure him that everything was alright, it was just a joke.
But Onew’s hand didn’t move.
He should be feeling rather happy now. He was not attached to someone! He was a free man. He wouldn’t have to face Key’s ranting or avoid his spatula attacks. He doesn’t need to watch what he had said in order to avoid offending Key. He doesn’t need to carry heavy bags for Key while they go shopping.
Onew tried to smile.
It didn’t work, and his heart seemed to sink down to the earth. If this was what he really wanted, why did he feel like he had done something really wrong? Snow started to fall onto Onew’s hair, the wind bitingly cold.
Nothing clicked in Onew’s mind then, except for the image of Key’s broken face.
-
“You’re an idiot.” Onew’s features were full of guilt and remorse, as Jonghyun silently whispered to him. Minho’s features were stony as well, as the three of them sat around the table in Onew’s apartment.
It had been three days since the confrontation between Onew and Key. But to Onew, those three days seemed to be three years. It was hell; he couldn’t sleep and he couldn’t pass a day without thinking about Key and his whining.
“You’re more than an idiot. Totally unbelievable, dumb and the dumbest of the dumbest-s! Selfish and self-centred, a scandal, shame on the mankind and more than that! You’re evil! You’re-“
“If you were sure of your decision, why did you tell us this now?” Minho promptly cut Jonghyun’s rant off cleverly, though the other male was still going on and on about the insults. Onew sighed, his face looking as though it had aged for a good five years.
He had asked himself this question as well before, the nights when he couldn’t sleep.
If he was so sure, that he didn’t want Key anymore, why is he regretting it now? He was so confident that he didn’t want Key at first, really sure that without Key, his life would be so much better and he would be free.
But instead of being free, Onew felt lost instead.
“I...I d-don’t know...”
Minho didn’t reply anything, but he took a deep breath. Onew buried his head with his large palms, his heart already sinking down to the ozone layer in the earth. “You’re everything that I’ve thought you weren’t. You can’t give a man his happiness; so why did you even be with him in the first place?!”
Jonghyun’s face was red, his eyes betraying his emotions even though his voice was holding back his anger. Onew peeked out from the slits of his fingers to study Jonghyun’s face guiltily, while Minho kept quiet.
Of course, he had forgotten. Jonghyun had loved Key as well, almost as much as Key loved Onew. From the first few weeks of knowing Key, Jonghyun had been already smitten by the fiery guy and Minho knows that well.
But Key could never see Jonghyun the way he saw Onew. It was clear since Key had said happily, “I’m so lucky to have you as my best friend!” to him. Jonghyun’s heart was crushed and buried, but he had never shown it on his face.
Best friends, was at least better than strangers, at least.
“I thought you could give him happiness, a smile on his face every day. And you just have to break his heart! You think this is a funny game?! To declare that you want to break up and then patch up again?!”
Onew shuffled nervously, and Minho reached out to rub Jonghyun’s back to soothe him. The blonde slapped his hand away angrily though, before he got up and prepared to leave. “You disappoint me, Lee Jinki. Do the right thing already! Give him the happiness that I can’t give, you fool!”
The last part was bit out bitterly, as though Jonghyun was choking back his tears as the door slammed hastily. Silence quaked the house, as Onew slowly let the words Jonghyun had said sink into him.
Minho sighed, as he got up as well. He didn’t need to say anything else more. Jonghyun had already made the impact to Onew, and the younger male didn’t want to stress the other male anymore. Onew was smart; he knew what he had to do in order to stop his insomnias.
The door opened again, before it was closed gently. Onew leant back onto the floor, words and images flooding his mind like a whirlwind.
“Wow, your cheeks are so round and soft! You shall be Tofu!”
“Yah, throw your dirty clothes into the basket! The floor’s not your cabinet!”
“Today, I’m going to make the number one dish in the world! Tofu stew!”
“Onew, you’re so adorable~ I really love you...”
His mind was only full of Key. Images of Key, things that reminded him of Key. Only solely of Kim Kibum; his adorable smirk whenever he saw something that he excelled at, his face whenever he laughed at jokes...
“...Jinki-yah... Don’t ever leave me... alright..?”
It felt as though Key’s fingers were laced together with his again, the invisible warmth flooding his heart immensely. The body warmth that came from Key’s body, the small puffs of warm breath that would touch his skin lightly as Key breathed.
“He can never love me the way he loves you. So please... Promise me that you’ll never make him cry.”
“Kibum only looks at you with those eyes. Eyes that look at you as a man he can trust his heart to. He calls me his best friend, a friend that he can trust his back to. The difference is big.”
“Don’t ever leave Kibum alone for a minute, alright? He loves being paid attention to, even though he yells at you to get away from his sight.”
“It’s his birthday today, isn’t it? Get him some roses or something romantic. He’ll love it!”
“Give him the happiness that I can’t give, you fool!”
Jonghyun had been so passionate about his love for Key, unlike how Onew was. Jonghyun was always a step ahead of him; he always knew where Key would be and how he would be feeling.
The seriousness of Jonghyun’s voice when he had asked Onew to give him happiness... And Onew had broken it. What a lousy hyung he was.
Warm liquid slid down Onew’s cheekbones, and it felt as though his skin was burning. But Onew didn’t lift his hand up to wipe the tears away.
If we can meet again, I'll won't let you get away - Part 2/2.
