Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder boasts a strong cast and a clever, original concept. While humour is subjective, and most comedies don't really work for me, this film did, with a few insightful jabs at Hollywood culture and jokes that generally hit more than miss. The film features perhaps too many characters, because all their arcs seem oddly rushed. Out of the ensemble, Downey Jr's is the most memorable, partly due to his weird, method-Blackface character, but also his great performance and natural charisma. A certain Hollywood A-lister also makes an entertaining, off-the-wall appearance. Tropic Thunder has moments where it seems to shift into bona fide action movie mode and wants us to take its characters' seriously, and others that just seem completely irreverent -- sometimes, the whole movie seems to creak under the weight of its disparate elements. (THREE out of five)
