hostilities at Warsaw

The program I'm studying in college right now is media/arts/something or other -- I'm still not entirely sure, but I expect it to get me into showbiz someday; that's good enough for me. I think film and television plays into it somehow, I don't know.

Familiarity with movies should be no problem for me, but the television part is more difficult. For something that's supposed to be accessible and mass-media, this business of "watching TV" is surprisingly hard to get into. Heck, if I wasn't supposed to eventually be doing this crap as a career, I wouldn't even begin to try and comprehend this bloody arcanum.

Suppose I wanted to start following a show, let's say... Heroes. (During the past summer, this was not a hypothetical situation.) What do I do now? Wikipedia tells me Heroes is broadcast on NBC. This is not a channel I receive. Even if I did receive NBC - what then? Do I monitor the air 24/7 until I catch an episode?

Let's say I do get lucky, and Heroes does happen to air - how do I know which episode I'm watching? If it's a long-running show like 24, does that mean I have to catch up with ninety hours of backstory before I can watch the current season? I'm kind of a completionist when it comes to order and continuity in fiction, so it's like I only ever have an hour-long window to latch on to a show.

I guess I could just wait seven years and catch it all on DVD, but that's longer than I'm willing to wait to start studying this weird and wonderful world of television that I'm supposed to be working in someday.

In other grumblings, my DVD player died again, which makes it the fourth DVD player I've ever owned to magically stop working. One of them I paid to get fixed, but it promptly died again a week later.

My PS2 also started acting up recently, so I tried cleaning the lens with alcohol and cotton swabs as per online DIY instructions. Suffice it to say, that stopped working, too. Whoops.

Heck, I'd complain more, but who'd listen?
