Well, here we go again; a horrible mass shooting has stirred up another ridiculous showdown based on the false dichotomy of "Pro-guns vs. anti-guns". I'm sick of this argument because, frankly, both sides are full of shit.
Pro gun people: Get over this delusion you have that people carrying guns are somehow safer from these psychopaths than people without them. They're catching people by suprise and shooting them dead before they'd be able to draw and fire. Don't kid yourselves; your gun hobby won't save you in this situation.
Anti-gun peaple: Do you really think it's possible to get rid of guns in this country? REALLY?! There are probably as many guns as there are people in the US; that genie is out of the bottle! All gun bans do is disarm the law abiding citizenry; the very people who DON'T need to be disarmed...
My solution? Let's REALLY stick to the second amendment; the WHOLE second amendment. My gun enthusiast friends seem to be very eager to skip over the first half of that amendment; the part about the "Well regulated militia". So I say we follow the whole amendment.
I'd start with adding a gun safety and awareness class-similar to Driver's Ed.- to the curriculum of middle schools nationwide. 12&13 year-olds are plenty old enough to start learning how to be responsible around guns; I started learning this stuff hwen I was 10.
The next step is mandatory military service for all adult citizens (The well regulated militia). 2 years straight out of high school, unless you go to college. Otherwise, 2 years straight out of college. After your 2 years of military service, you're licensed for life (barring any criminal activity which would forfeit such license) to own and carry firearms.
This would not only serve as a system for vetting the citizenry for gun ownership, it would also restore the citizen army sataus of our military and eliminate the current mercenary status of it.
