Daemon/Enma Mini-manifesto (copy pasta from Tumblr)

It’s just piqued my interest lately because of Daemon attitude towards Enma. Daemon calls him by first name and talks to him in an almost affectionate way, whilst he refers to Tsuna derogatorily. And then I was reading thoughts on chapter 340 and something a fan said really….hit me somewhere. It’s simple, she was only stating “Enma are you seriously going to die with that freaky eggplant?”. I did realise then, Enma was prepared to die along with Daemon Spade. There’s a proverb in Chinese, 同归于尽, which means to die together and it has a high romance factor (as in Kyoko/Sayaka). Long story short, I’ve seen it used to describe chapter 340. I know it’s not like he had a choice, it’s not like he even likes Daemon. But still, it sounded almost, almost romantragic (and I’m an emotional masochist).

I’d have to distinguish Daemon’s attitude to Chrome vs his attitude to Enma. Both are obviously his tools, I’m not going to say he had any real feelings for either of them. Though it always seemed to me he liked to toy with Enma’s mind more. Daemon destroyed everything around him, except him directly. It was like Enma was Daemon’s creation, a puppet. Everything was carefully orchestrated so that Enma would grow up hating the Vongola and hating Tsuna. It worked, for a while.

Curiously, Daemon seems to be no stranger to Enma. Adelheid had said that they got their information about the rings and Vongola from Daemon Spade (although she wasn’t aware he was inside Julie). When Daekuro showed up, it was Enma who reacted to him first. Saying “You trick everyone in Simon, you tricked me…” When I first read this part I felt a subtle tingle. Because it felt less like anger but more like anguish from betrayal. And we all know how much Enma hates to be betrayed.

After Enma teams up with Tsuna, Daemon plays his little mind games again. Why, how nice of you to remind Enma he still has beef with the Vongola (if not for readers’ sakes!) Daemon doesn’t talk down to Enma like he does with Tsuna. Think of it this way, if Tsuna is scum in his eyes, then Enma is like a toy, or a pet. Then, Daemon starts referring to Enma on first-name-basis, which thoroughly creeped me out on first reading. The manipulation vibes are strong. When Enma ceases to believe him, Daemon makes this rare displeased expression as if his pet is now disobeying him.

And then, is it just me or does Enma not have it as hard as Tsuna did in 340? While he was sucking Daemon clones into the black hole, they didn’t even retaliate immediately. Lol well I’m reading too much into this and I’m sure Daemon wastes no chance to show off his…skills. Anyways, when Daemon realizes what Enma was going to have Tsuna do, he does make another expression. Not the spitting anger he displayed at Giotto saving Cozzato, but rather…disbelief? His own little puppet is now his ultimate foil (and even then he’s still calling Enma “Enma”).

It’s interesting to note that in this fight, Enma is the one taking the wheel. He suggested to Tsuna to defeat Daemon together, he calmly dodged Daemon’s mind games (even when Tsuna showed insecurity), he had the idea of bending the trajectories of Tsuna’s XX Canon, and finally he was the one to catch Daemon and was willing to sacrifice himself if it would defeat Daemon. Enma is trying so hard to bring down the cause of all his pain. That…is very brave. It’s almost as if he’s the one truly facing Daemon and directing Tsuna to help him.

Dear god I just don’t want Enma to die…

Oh oops it ended up being much longer than I had thought haha well this is an interesting but brutal ship.
