Summary: Chinen's life couldn't be better -- until Daiki breaks up with him. Over a year passes but Chinen refuses to be with anyone else, turning down dates from pretty girls and boys. Chinen's mom decides to sign him up for summer school courses to help him "get ahead in school and not sulk around for another summer." He must walk to the school where classes will be held, three blocks away, and Chinen couldn't think of a worse way to spend his summer. On his first day he wakes up late, his hair a muss, and gets lost in the building while trying to find his classroom. He takes a seat in the middle row of three, near the back corner. He watches the students pour in and sees someone he vaguely recognizes. Yamada Ryosuke. Yeah, that was his name.
Chapter 1
~~~
School lets out in a month. Chinen sat in his now vacant room, staring at the turquoise walls he had painted himself. He stared at the closet, the full length mirrors, the indentations in door frame he had created while measuring his height as he grew up. Chinen looked out the window, out into the yard, out at the street, the other houses. The view he would never see again. He wasn't sure exactly why his parents had decided to move and he didn't ask. As soon as Chinen had told Daiki he was moving, the boy had told him that it would not affect their relationship at all. Daiki told him that, if anything, the distance would make them stronger.
Chinen examined his room once more from the brown carpet he always hated to the badly patched hole in his ceiling. He fingered the closet doors that used to always come unhinged and would need to be fixed by his father because Chinen was too small to do it himself. Despite all these things, Chinen would miss this room. He would miss the bedroom he always ran to when something went wrong. He would miss the way the floors creaked, and the way he always feared the mirror hanging on the side wall would one day fall on him. He would miss his friends and his life here. But most of all, he would miss walking to Daiki's house after a long day where the two of them would just talk. Chinen would no longer be within walking distance. He would no longer be able to see the boy whenever he wanted. This was the least of his worries though. Daiki had said it wouldn't affect anything, and Chinen believed him.
Thoughts of Daiki made Chinen long to see him. Chinen pulled out his phone and typed the message I could be at your house in ten minutes if I wanted to.
Daiki responded almost instantly as he always did. You're close? Come over! :) He smiled at the message.
Chinen took a last look at his bedroom before closing the door on his way out. Chinen walked down the stairs slowly coming to an empty living room. He walked to the kitchen hoping to find his mother, but he found a note instead saying she had left for the store. Chinen grabbed the pen beside the note and wrote that he would be taking a walk.
Chinen left his house and began walking the route he was so used to making, following the sidewalk, remembering all the times he had walked on it, run on it, made chalk drawings on it. He remembers learning how to ride his bike on this very street. He takes a turn and keeps walking, wondering whether he would ever come back to walk here again. Chinen looked ahead and saw someone walking in his direction off in the distance. Chinen was too far away to tell for sure but he knew it was Daiki and he ran as fast as he could and jumped into the older boy's arms as soon as he was close enough. Daiki wrapped his arms around Chinen tightly, he didn't let go but instead continued walking in the direction Chinen had come.
Chinen looked up at him and cocked his head to the side. "Dai-chan! Where are we going?"
"We're going to the park, Chii." Daiki smiled at him but his smile turned into a pout as Chinen detached himself and steps onto the ground. Chinen's excitement shows as a smile breaks out across his face and grabs Daiki's hand to nearly drag him to the park. Chinen stares at the park as it comes it to view. He looks at the little kids running around, playing on the jungle gym, the older kids hanging out by the picnic tables trying to act cool, and some other kids playing tennis. Daiki leads him to the tennis courts, apparently he knows one of them. The two of them sit on the grass just outside the courts.
"I'll miss you, Chii." Daiki says, his voice sounding almost sad. "I'll miss us being able to be with each other all the time like this."
"You said it would be okay, nyaaa! Dai-chan said it would make us stronger!" Chinen couldn't keep the worry he was feeling from coming out in his voice. He'd never heard Daiki sound sad before.
"I did say that." Daiki's usual smile came back and he pulled something small from his pocket, "Chinen…"
Chinen looked up into Daiki's bright eyes. Daiki didn't usually ever call him anything besides Chii. He held a ring up for Chinen to see and placed it on top of Chinen's knee.
"Marry me, Chinen. Take this and we'll always be together." Daiki's eyes shined as he spoke, "We'll always, no matter how far you go or where life takes us, we'll always be tied to each other. I know we're to young to actually get married but, Chii, just wear this and we'll never be separated. Please, Chii, please say yes."
He looked down at the silver ring. It wasn't anything fancy, but it meant more to Chinen at that moment than the most extravagant ring in the world. He nodded, letting out an "I love you" that was almost inaudible and slips the ring on his finger. Just then he feels vibrating in his pocket. He pulled out his cell phone and reads a message from his mom telling him to come home, they were leaving. "Mou… Dai-chan, it's time to go." Chinen pouts as he stands up.
Daiki gets up as Chinen does and they start on the way back. They come to the street where they must part ways and Chinen once again jumps on Daiki, making sure no one was around to see first. They hold each other tightly before Daiki pries the younger one off and kisses his forehead. "I'll see you soon, my love. I promise."
Chinen smiles and starts toward the house in the distance. His heart flutters and he feels like he's walking on air.
Chinen is woken from his sleep by his cell phone's loud ringtone. He's annoyed and he considers telling the caller to leave him alone, that is, until he sees who the caller actually is. His annoyance vanishes and is replaced by happiness as he clicks the talk button and hears Daiki's voice. "Hey, Chii…"
"Hi, Dai-chan," Chinen says sleepily, "I miss you~"
"Mm, I...I do too…" Daiki said, getting the words out in a rush. "Listen, Chii… I think… I think we should…"
Chinen propped himself up on his elbows, he was getting worried. Daiki never talked to him like this. "You think we should… what?"
He could hear the deep breath being taken on the other end of the phone. "I think… I think we should start seeing other people."
He said it. The words Chinen had hoped he would never, ever hear. "But, Dai-chan, you promised! You promised me moving wouldn't change anything! You promised we would stay together! You said you would see me soon! You're lying! You love me. You would never say these things to me… Dai-chan this isn't true." Tears were streaming down his pale cheeks. He couldn't understand. Why is this happening?
"I'm sorry." And he hung up. That was it.
Chinen cried. He didn't understand. Why would this happen? It didn't happen, he decided. This was a bad dream. Just a very bad dream… but he couldn't stop crying. Tears still leaked from his eyes well after he fell asleep.
