Dearest Dairy,
Mama says I’m down with a bad case of “mumps”. I feel feverish and terrible. My mouth and throat are both swollen and horribly painful.
Cousin Sophie came over to see me yesterday. She told me she would let me have her teddy over for the night - and when I woke this morning she had already gone and the teddy is still with me. I love teddies. I have one of my own, a sweet little bear in a red dress Mama made herself, but Cousin Sophie’s is bigger and smells of lavender.
Char, too, let me have her collection of what she calls the “bear-fied version of the Seven Dwarfs”. When I get better I shall knit little colored caps for each of them and give them proper names. I’d give Cousin Sophie’s teddy a nice hat too.
I am now forced to take a spoonful of the syrup of figs every morning because the Doctor says it’ll help with the mumps. I dislike the taste of figs. I told Mama I would much rather have raspberry syrup, but Mama replied that it would only make the mumps worse.
With love,
Ginevra
P.S. Char offered to let me have a lucky rabbit’s foot. It smelled terrible! I was so scared that I screamed and caused Mama to break a vase. I got a lucky horseshoe instead.
P.S.S. Char was reading over my shoulder! Fortunately the only word she saw was “Diary”. She told me I’ve spelt it wrongly, and that “Dairy” refers to milk instead of a book. Strange - I saw Mama spell “Diary” this way too the other day.
For every day (or almost every day) Ginny is off getting her faceup I'll post one entry for her diary. Trust Ginny to be down with mumps. The poor dear is supposed to be a sickly child, so she is very susceptible to diseases.
Ginny calls Charlotte "Char", and Charlotte basically calls Ginny everything that is considered alcoholic, just because "Ginevra" can be abbreviated to "Gin". Their mother calls Charlotte "Liesel", which is a variant of the name Charlotte, and calls Ginny anything from "Sugar lump" to "Little Creature". XD
Ginny doesn't know that after "P.S." comes "P.P.S." instead of "P.S.S.", but she will learn someday. 8D Ginny's mother didn't take her own education very seriously (as she had to work to care for her seven other siblings), so she isn't very good with her spelling. Thank god for Charlotte, who actually has excellent command of the language.
/yay.
