Once upon a time, there were two lovely sisters named Jane and Elizabeth. They were the oldest and youngest of seven siblings. Jane married Mr. Baudelaire, and Elizabeth wedded Mr. Ashcombe. Their daughters were Charlotte, Ginevra and Sophie.
Once upon a time, there was beautiful lady named Lucia Grey, the daughter of Lord and Lady Grey.
And so the story begins...
Family tree!
Yuuhi's name is cut off... ;A; And if you squint you can see Lord Grey (chibi form though XD) in the corner, though Lady Grey is sadly obscured.
Sophie's and Charlotte's mothers are sisters. :D They were from a relatively large and poor family (surname's Bennett, just so I can spoof Pride & Prejudice), so Jane, as the eldest, had to work from an early age - she was a florist's assistant. Elizabeth, meanwhile, got to have a bit of schooling because of her elder sister's efforts at work. Even though they have a substantial age gap, the sisters are the closest of all their siblings (two other sisters and three brothers).
Mr. Baudelaire was the second out of two sons in his own family, and the more obedient one. His elder brother, who was supposed to have taken over the family business, left to become a pianist, leaving the business in the hands of Mr. Baudelaire. Mr. Baudelaire now spends his days overseeing the company, taking Mrs. Baudelaire out to parties, and rather oddly, cultivating flowers.
After meeting Mr. Baudelaire at the florist's shop she worked in and marrying him, Mrs. Baudelaire now spends her time buying pretty dresses she never got to wear in her youth, attending numerous parties and spending indulgently, as if to make up for the days of poverty in her past.
Mr. Ashcombe was a rather normal young man, though prone to acts of truancy and occasional delinquency. He was hiding among the bookshelves from the librarian (he had unwittingly destroyed one of his sister's library books, and was forced to own up) when he met Elizabeth, then a rather studious girl. Since then, he has fixed his undesirable habits and is a good husband and father. He spends his days watching over Sophie, glaring at James, and looking at automobiles (of which he is a great fan of).
Elizabeth went on to become a governess after she completed her studies, but has since settled down to become Mrs. Ashcombe. Mrs. Ashcombe is primarily occupied with stuffing James with food whenever he comes down to tea and playing the violin with her daughter. She now rarely visits the library, but keeps the book Mr. Ashcombe had destroyed as a reminder of their meeting.
Lord Grey, a stiff and old-fashioned nobleman, is the descendant of a long line of respected nobles. However, the family fortune had long since run out before Lord Grey's time, so despite their dignified and refined exterior the Grey family lives a rather hard life, at the mercy of other more prosperous relatives of whom Lord Grey is rather bitter about. Lady Grey was once a distant cousin to Lord Grey before she became his beloved wife - but she has long since passed away from illness, leaving only Lucia to look after her aging father.
If Lord Grey knew his daughter were mixing around with shady young men like Williams he'd be furious and probably have a heart attack, but he is thankfully oblivious to his daughter's many adventures. He spends his days reading, visiting his wife's grave and trying to get his daughter to marry a rich man.
