so to fill the void left by the sopranos the home box has given us john from cincinnati and the flight of the concords. has anyone watched john? it's weird, but i'm compelled to watch it. maybe that's just because i watched back to back eps on demand and i could get into it. we'll see if it captures me enough to go back week after week. i do ( Read more... )

i've only seen the first ep (my cable is fucked up again; this time we have the guide & dvr, but we don't get any of the HBOs or any hi-def channels. and the internet is spotty. it's actually funny to me at this point) of john, but i have more faith in david milch to make a show i will like than just about anyone. nypd blue & deadwood are 2 of my all-time favorite shows, w/ deadwood being (in my opinion) probably the best-written show ever in the history of television.

i could think of a hell of a lot worse things than a flight of the conchords version of tenacious d. if there's one thing hbo has been missing from their lineup, it is a consistently hilarious comedy show. curb your enthusiasm takes approximately one millennium between seasons, and entourage hasn't been really consistent since the first season. we are now a decade removed from the days of mr. show & tenacious d, & we could use some of that love on the home box. also: "them with some dialog setting up a situation where they can sing one or two of their ridiculous songs in context." what exactly are you looking for? it's not like there are a ton of ways to incorporate ridiculous songs into a sketch-type comedy series. it's the most sensible way to translate their act into a tv show. otherwise you run the risk of taking them out of their element & thus making them into something else. something not as funny. they gotta make it do what it do, baby.

"maybe now they'll wait, like, two years too long and make a movie nobody goes to see . . ."

there are so many things wrong with this i don't know where to begin. first of all, they waited at least FIVE years too long to make the movie. second, plenty of people went to see it. people with taste. i myself saw it TWICE. people forget that it opened while fucking james bond & borat were breaking all kinds of box office records w/ movies that weren't anywhere near as funny or action-packed (respectively) as The D's. it is the single greatest musical ever made, EVER, and no arguments will be heard on that subject because none are even possible. in 1000 years people will remember the Pick of Destiny. long after borat is nothing but the name of a hideous mutant amalgamation of a boar & a rat that roams the post-apocalyptic wastes.

i agree, with milch behind the wheel i have faith in it.

i'm not saying FotC wasn't funny and i'm not saying i didn't laugh, because i did. all i'm saying is i've seen this before. and you are right, out of their element they are not as funny. this being said, their element is on a stage in front of a live audience, not on tv.

now having seen ep 2 of john & ep 1 of fotc, i can comment furthur.

i am already loving john. (with the glaring exception of luke perry, who reads his lines like the lead in a high school play who thinks he's good but no one has the heart to tell him he sucks balls because he's the star quarterback. seriously, fucking dylan makes the kid who plays shaun seem like a young marlon brando by comparison.) i can't get enough of ed o'neill. he is basically playing andy sipowicz +35% crazy. it's awesome. he's even got the forehead rub thing down. al bundy as sipowicz, how can you not love that? i was hype to see garret dillahunt as the doc. he was awesome on deadwood. both times. plus you have ellsworth smoking fatties. bonus.

as for fotc, i can see where you guys are coming from. the d is strong with this one. the whole thing with lee mel the superfan esp felt derivative. but the songs are effing hilarious. so i will keep watching.
