We went to Municipal Hall yesterday to watch some bands playing. Usually they have tribute bands playing at the R&B festival, but yesterday they actually had a couple of REAL bands including The Animals- I half expected them to stagger on with zimmer frames and pace makers. I did wonder if they had a few first aiders on stand buy just incase they got a little over enthusiastic with their instruments. As it happened, the guys were still fab. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Even my kids were enthusiastic about the group and they are only 6 & 8 years old (obviously they have tatste). I was trying to explain to my children how priviledged they were to be able to see The Animals playing live here in grotty old Colne. I don't think they really understand the concept of fame, but they do seem to understand that mummy must be very old (but I'm only 26!)
The next band on was Ten Years After. Ten Years After what exactly? According to my boyfriend they were big back in the seventies, but I can't say as I have never heard of them. I wasn't all that impressed by their perfermance myself, but having said that I was all raring to see Janis Joplins backing band- Big Brother and the Holding Company. The singer was an Australian lady called Kitto. She was a good singer, a few more Marlboro and she might start to sound like Janis Joplin! but in all honesty I don't think she needs to sound like her. Her own voice was beautiful. She did a Chris Kristopherson number- Me and Bobby McGee- it was so beautifully sang. The blokes sat in front of me appeared to be more interested in her cleavage than her singing- every time she leaned over with the microphone they were taking snap shots of her chest! Honestly, these guys were in their forties- and I thought boys grew up into men, obviously not in some cases!
We had to leave half way through her performance, my kids had sat through two hours worth of bands already and they were very well behaved. Unfortunately part way through this performance my son started making a nuisance of himself. I was very pleased with both of them for sitting quietly through two hours of music, I can't complain that my son couldn't pull off another hour, but it was a shame that we had to miss the rest of this band. It really was very good. I had hoped that Kitto would attempt the Mercedes Benz song, it would have been nice to find out if she had the voice for it. I guess I will never know!
I really enjoyed myself yesterday despite the crowds and the drinking. I'm happy to say that the festival is now over for another year, hopefully I will be able to sleep peacefully tonight!
