Compulsary recycling in my area seemed like the best thing since sliced bread, and since it came into being I have been happily seperating my waste into the relevent bags and boxes all the while thinking that I am doing my bit for the environment.
I learned today that this is not the case, especially where plastics are concerned. I am so niave. I thought that all those plastic bottles I use go away to be melted down and turned into new plastic bottles, but it seems I am wrong. The word recycling isn't valid as far as plastic is concerned. I have been conned. The process is called "reprocessing". The plastic that goes in, does not come out the same. The "reprocessed" plastic that comes out is so low quality that it is only useful to make certain NON-RECYCLABLE items out of it. So much for plastic bottle recycling being environmentally friendly.
If this isn't bad enough, my mum told me she had seen a documentry on Sky about plastic bottle recycling. Most of Britains plastic bottles are exported to poverty stricken countries where people are working for pitence in unsanitary conditions seperating the reusable from the non-reusable. Young children were filmed playing in the thick of it all while in the background the "recycling" factory is pumping out thick black clouds of smoke and fumes into the local environment. Keep Britain green- contaminate a poverty stricken country. I'm really impressed-NOT!!!
