Pi's charms

Jan 06, 2016 23:31

So, yes, I don't have a Yamapi's icon, and actually doubt I ever will, but that's not the point. Anyway, this isn't my first 2016 post, actually I'm working on a very random and Arashi biased post but I wanted to write about this now.

Now, I've read a couple of days ago a bunch of very positive reviews about this dorama, specially from very biased Pi's fans. *Yes I like to call him Pi with no honorifics, lol* And honestly I don't get it. I mean, maybe Japan has totally ruined my taste for romance and now it wants to make me enjoy light and predictable romance again? what?! Make up your mind Japan! LOL I'm really hating my january work timetable, maybe this is where my annoyance comes from...but I'll try to write down my very unbiased opinion on this... or else, I'll try writing down something.. meh.
data from d-addicts as usual And a lot of caps, mostly non-mine ones.

About my reasons to see this

In one symbol = π

Lol, okay, I'm lying but I really enjoy teasing with Yamapi's nicknames. The truth is that I really like Ishihara Satomi as well. She is really pretty and despite being a little annoying she is actually quite cute and I enjoy watching her in front of a camera. From the beginning I thought this was a smart casting of Yamapi, producers or him, who knows? someone out there really knows this guy's weak points. And in this character as a buddhist monk, we all expected him to be serious, right, and actually show the same expressionless face over and over. And Yamapi is good at that. Finally, I stayed truthful to my word of at least checking something with Pi on it, although I didn't even try that Summer Nude, it just didn't call me, lol, gomen ne Pi.

About the plot

He is a monk

Well, we all know that by now. This is based on a manga, so expect every weird displaced manga reality out there. That's something I don't get about viewers, if it's based in a manga, there will be situations that would seem really crazy and specially if it's a shoujo there will be situations most likely chauvinists. Yes, that's the reality most of the times, and from what I heard from the manga, this was really toned down, good choice. And that is in a way, part of its charm, deal with it.
Okay, I haven't said much of the plot, but it's lovely to find out while watching it, right?
One interesting detail though, is that she works in an institute as an English teacher. Now, this means that many of the characters actually have much more dialogues of what I'd imagine in English. Satomi was pretty cute speaking in English, I almost understood everything she said, almost, lol, I'm laughing as a future English teacher myself. But she seemed pretty confident on that, which makes me think about my confidence... And as well, there are a bunch of teachers that also try their best at speaking in English. The manager in the institute, I believe he was... was the worst by far at it, which is a pity, but he was cute, so I'll let that pass. And the one that surprised me the most, was no other than Yampai himself, he's quite good at it! Of course I'm talking about pronunciation, which is really tricky to handle for Japanese people, and many others.
So, interesting characters in interesting environments, that's a nice variation, so it's a nice start.

About the scenneries

For me??

So, I wanted to talk about this before rambling about the characters because this is a quality production. Lots of outdoor takes and open spaces, and the actual usual places are just beautiful, packed with amazing little details.
You'll see the temple, which is quite open and full of beautiful natural places, I don't know how to explain it, lol, but you'll get to see it from the inside, too. Then we have, beautiful tiny Junko's family's apartment, that would be Satomi's character. This place is so cozy and tiny and it's just so cute. Then the institute which is amazing! I wish any of the institutes I know could be like this, it's so nice and modern, I really like the board! I wonder if it's clear to notice the letters since it's made of glass, but it looks so fashionable. And as I mentioned before there are a lot of scenes outdoor, and you know what I mean with a lot, most of doramas are so cloistered in only one space that this was a delight to watch, I really enjoyed that.

About the others

Whose all this people, and they know nothing about the danger if there's a fire??

The lovingly family

They were extremely annoying at first, but as the story moves on, they become this lovingly family, that really supports and encourages Junko. The sister was specially cute, I liked her moles haha.

The ELA institute

Now, many characters here, and many of them really interesting. A couple of students, and mostly the other staff working there. A mention to Yuki, and I know him like that because of my friend who became his fan after Itazura na kiss, I can't see him as Naoki at all, but that's probably because I haven't watch it.. But, I really enjoyed his interactions with Yamapi!

Yes, he's raising both of his hands.
And we also have Miss Momoe, Takanashi Rin, which was funny and competitive Kawakami-sensei in Dr. Rintaro, well, I wanted to see more from her, actually I didn't recognize her at first, I'm terrible with faces and she's so funny when she speaks so fast about her fandom, lol.
In general, I enjoyed all the side plots, they didn't feel forced or as fillings.

The tera people

Here we have a bunch of other monks or people from the temple, meaning Takane's family, yeah that's Pi's name. And of course, scary mother, in this case, grandmother, couldn't be missing. The fact that she's the same actress in Domyoji's mother's part, just makes me do a bunch of comparisons, and there's a bunch of posibilities, maybe that's my biased heart!. But tbh, come on, there's a lot of similarities, and don't let me get started with the kisses!! come on, I'll just be quite now..
So, but, the scenes with Kokoro-kun were so cute!

About the real charm in this

the laugh

There were a couple of episodes in which this was my jam, and that would be two, I don't believe there were three. And that was after we've surpassed that awkward starting point and before all the cheesy drama started. And the thing I liked the most is that this was actually funny, I mean Takane has all these flaws but he is honest, and honestly funny.

And their chemistry is no joke, they look so cute together. Now, there were a lot of people that found the reason of this in Satomi's charm. But, I'll give some credit to Yamapi as well. Tbh, this is the first dorama in which I find Yamapi extremely cute, he is cute, and his expressions were subtle and sweet, of course Takane is suffocating, but he can give you pretty expensive gifts.

Of course, there are other things too, as the charming of him remembering every little insignificant detail as an anniversary. In the end, all I can think about is that Yamapi is really cute and I've never seen that before, lol.

About my marks

That smile!

Well, I was really mad at those reviews, and now I endep up writing just nice things, what's going on?? I mean, of course this has these very weak points, as in the start, which was a little forced, I mean everyone was forcing this situation on Junko to a point in which was annoying. But later, it was a very cute and funny love comedy. Later again, we have full predictable drama. Of course, you know how this is ending, which is pretty dissapointing, I mean to be so predictable. But I won't spoil you the end, except for this, I loved the christmas tree.
So, the summary is, the plot nothing new, I've seen it before, the way they solved the triangle was pathetic and there were many details here and there that bothered me. But the chemistry was nice, the sceneries were beautiful, the OST was a bit repetitive but lovely and the side plots were acceptable. So all in all, if you can get distracted from the lame denouement by all of this, you'll certainly enjoy the ride.

I thought of giving this a 3, but come on, it's a Christmas' season story, let's enjoy the ride!

And this was my first review from 2016, yay!!, from a 2015 dorama, but anyway. To end, at least I got to know Back number's music, a little, and if you got the chance check their song Heroine, I LOVED it when they played it with Kanjani eito.

Hopefully I'll get to do more reviews, and a nice reminder tip is that I almost watched half of this without subtitles and was extremely fun! I mean I understood a lot more, actually I usually do this with getsukus, because of the predictable factor, lol, looking at you Koinaka!, and that's so encouraging, this year, one of my goals is to get into business with Japanese :D
And to finish this!

This happened!!

And this

And this, Neen, I'm so much like you!! Stop doing this!

And this, he's so cute!

Okay, a lot, as usual in Arashi land, wait, no Matsujun??

Well, you know how I feel about you J
