Can a Renewal of the TV Show Chuck save NBC? - Can we expect a Chuck Series Cancellation?

Will Chuck be canceled? The question on the mind of TV critics; Is NBC in so much trouble that renewing the series Chuck is the only solution? Not a pleasant thought for fans but it gives a glimmer of hope that the show may be saved yet. I bumped into this blog by Alan Sepinwall via this Tvbythenumbers.com post. Sepinwall After reviewing the Chuck episode “Chuck vs. the Final Exam” had this to say:

I still believe NBC's problems are too big and widespread for "Chuck" to not come back next year, even if it's just as cannon fodder until other parts of the schedule can stabilize. (If they try to come back in the fall with a schedule that's primarily composed of new shows, they're gonna get killed.)

NBC hasn’t been keen on saving its scripted shows. Chuck itself is the only survivor of the 2007-2008 season. The only show to get word this year is Dan Harmon’s very worth “Community”. Chuck was saved for a third season by a fan campaign and sponsor Subway. A thirteen episode run was also extended to 19 episodes.

My thoughts; the fans have really rallied around this show. Which makes it a worthy candidate for renewal, starting over again with new shows isn’t going to get NBC anywhere. Eventually you got to let a show develop a solid fan base. The 2009-2010 season has seen a lot of my favorites new shows become casualties. We need veteran series like Heroes and Chuck to keep fans interested in what is to come. That I agree with.

I resent the use of the term “cannon fodder”. In no way is a keeping a show like Chuck around a sacrifice to find the next thing. Each new season of a show allows the writers and producers to start over again and build on what they’ve already done. While Heroes has made some missteps they really came back to form with the third season, Samuel was a complex and interesting villain. The cliffhanger also has a lot of potential for new stories. If Chuck is kept I believe we can expect the show to grow and mature and get even better.

Even if Chuck doesn’t make it to renewal and the axe comes down and it is canceled, that may not be the end. The premise of Chuck lends itself well to the comic book form. Just because a show ends doesn’t mean it’s over. What form would you like to see Chuck Continue; Comic Books or a Movie?
