more of the old

I am back from a forced firewall hiatus. I am so glad to be back. No, scrap that, I am euphoric that I can now access my journal directly from work. Yes, I write most of my blabber from work, during that one hour lunch break where I allow myself freedom from all structured thinking and just write down the first thing that comes to mind. Actually the first word that comes to mind… and then I just let the drivel take a life of its own. For the past half year, I could not get into lj from work, which is a puzzler really because I can access Friendster with a freedom unbeknownst to most of my fellow corporate peons.

Thus, you’d have to forgive me for the next few days as I start writing down, trying to remember all that has happened in the past six months. I opened another blog through my friendster account but could not really pour out all my filth and lewdness there and open up my soul to what other people consider their personal chismis network (this is especially true for people like me who fear that I have lost touch with a lot of my friends and acquaintances because of the distance).

I will start with this boring list that will serve as my base for the next two or three updates. I read through my journal again from the beginning, which was sometime in 2001 and saw how much I have developed as a person. And since I have never been as active in updating as I would have liked, I managed to read a lot of milestone entries which made me realize that my growing up was not without its share of anecdotes and hormones.

So welcome back to me… hehe… and I solemnly pledge from hereon to be more loyal and less erratic in my updates. If I say I’ve grown up, this should not be so difficult. ;)

- My boss, with whom I have developed a fairly unstable love-hate relationship with for the past two years, has left the company for a new position with the competition. Thus leaving me with majority of his work. See, our company has changed structure from country management to functional management, which meant that instead of having one boss, the company suddenly has four, all reporting to their respective managers in the region. I became one of those.

- From our wonderful love shack which was right smack in the middle of the city, we have moved to somewhere (although, still within the city) a little bit off the center. I chose our former flat because I was new in Prague and since I did not know where anything is I reckoned it would be much better to have everything I think I will need around me. We found this nice new flat in a building which won the architectural award of 2004 in Prague. It’s five minutes from the swimming pool, its right along the river (you can imagine how nice it is in the summer), it has security and the design of the flat is a lot more modern than the previous one (more to our liking). It’s smaller than the other flat, but the balcony that looks out an endearing little courtyard makes up for it. It also doesn’t hurt that I do not have to pageant my daring, sometimes deadly parking skills in front of the whole neighborhood. Parking spaces are right under the security’s nose and are always available (a rarity in Prague).

- I managed to snag myself a driving license here with only a few lessons before the exam. It’s a little bit more complicated getting a driving license than in the Philippines. You’d have to go through three months worth of driving school, and you do not get to choose your schedule. Theory and practice and a final exam in the end. Quite different from my experience in Manila where all I had to do was to take the exam, and drive an owner type jeep backward and forward within the compound of the land transportation office, (well and go through having everyone hear my full name on the PA). Unfortunately the domestic license I am carrying cannot be swapped for an EU one. Apparently our regulations in the Philippines are neither sufficient nor fitting to EU rules, and thus Filipinos need to retake both the lessons and the exam.

I finished off the exam riding with another student, a policeman, the teacher. The other girl scared the daylights out of me when she took the car freewheeling on a blind down sloping corner. But aside from that little trauma, I passed the exam unscathed.

- For half of April and half of May I was going to and from Rotterdam in the name of professionalism, transition, getting to know my new slave driver and getting educated with my company’s values (yes, after five years of working in the same company they earnestly believe they can teach me more). I only managed to squeeze in a week’s worth of vacation, 3 days in Copenhagen with Liezel and her family (the rest of the week was spent on a finance training to help me with the nightmare of the budget and to help me understand the nightmarish figures from our finance department) and four days in Madrid with Lynn. April and May left my tongue wagging both in exhaustion and excitement. Although I spent most of it for work, I did get a chance to be with a couple of my closest friends.

- On March I attended yet another company weekend. I hate company weekends. Although this one is much better than all the rest I attended, I think I will never get to enjoy it honestly. This year they thought of bringing us all to mountains to go skiing. Since my arm is far from being totally healed I was stuck with a bob sled and back riding on other people’s skis. I think the guy I rode the skis with went home with less than an ear from all my cussing and screaming.

So it was not much of a post and some of it will be continued in the next ones for the sake of posterity. If I will ever have such. =)
