HOW TO STOP PROCRASTINATING AND START LEARNING ENGLISH NOW
FIND YOUR ‘WHY’, AND YOU’LL FIND YOUR PURPOSE!

In this article, I’ll show you how to find your motivation, your “why" to learn English starting from zero and make it work for you and have this magical energy and drive that keeps you going.

The truth is, you can start learning English right now. And you can start speaking right away, but understanding your “why" and following your dream takes time and work. I’ll show you how I found my “why" that gives me the energy to learn English every day, and how you can use these methods for yourself.

I’ll give you a step-by-step guide on how to find your “why” when learning English. I hope that these tips can clarify your purpose, and benefit your life and career.

First, let’s talk about the importance of having a purpose when you decide to start learning any foreign language.

When you are asked why are you learning English what would you answer be? To travel, for work, to improve my skills? Write down your answers in the comments below.

If you know WHY you are learning English, what you say should be coherent with what you do and what you believe in.

For example, you found that your “why" is to get a job in the multinational furniture producing company in a year. You say that you would start listening to business podcasts 3 times a week, you would be writing a summary of it afterwards and you would also be taking online English lessons twice a week to practice your speaking and improve your grammar. You not only say it, but you actually stick to your plan because you have your “why" and you believe that it would help you to achieve your goal.

WHAT’S WHY
You “why" is the engine behind everything you do. The “why" is connected to feelings. It allows you to get into an emotional state that would help you achieve all your goals.

You can’t simply say “I learn English because it’s important or to travel or to work". You need to define what specific benefits it would give you.

On your learning adventure, there would be moments when you would feel like quitting. Your brain starts to make up excuses: no money to pay for the course, wrong teachers, not enough time… My favourite one is the time -that’s what I always say to myself. Do you know what I’m talking about? And that’s when WHY should help you continue.

How to find you why

Think of one phrase that would describe your “why". What is the power that would put you in the right emotional state and would help you to achieve your goals no matter what even when you feel like quitting?

EXAMPLES

Bad “whys":

It’s the most popular language in the world.
English is the language of the world’s greatest literary masterpieces.

Good:

In a year I want to be able to pass an interview in English.

In three years, I would be able to pass UK University entrance exams.

In 6 months, I would be able to read and understand 70 per cent of a book in English, Rowling’s Harry Potter.

I give you my why as an example. I struggled a lot to figure out how to learn a foreign language, how to make it easier to remember words and grammar. My native language is Russian. I started with English, then I learned Japanese, Italian and French. It was so hard at the beginning! I decided to learn the mechanisms, shortcuts, methodology of how to make most of your learning and how to make this process fun! I got my first degree in Russia, then I got my second degree in France and then I got my Cambridge CELTA diploma. I did all that because I don’t want you to face difficulties like I had at the beginning and I want you to start speaking English, Russian, Japanese, any language easily! That’s my “why". To serve people helping them to start speaking languages fluently!

What is your WHY? Think about it.

Do it now! Write it in the comments.

FROM WHY TO HOW
When you found your “why" it’s easier to define your “how" - actions you take every day to achieve your goal.

There are many ways to learn a language. But you need to find something that you enjoy. Some people learn better when they read, others - when they do things. You need to find a way that would be perfect for you, your own way.

WHAT’S NEXT

Now you make the decision to act. To try. To do something. No matter how small.

You commit, for instance, you tell your family and friends that you would be taking an English exam in 3 months. When you found your “why" when you are committed you don’t hesitate any more.

And when you found your “why" it would be easier to commit to almost any "how". You start living intentionally, “on purpose”.

Now you’ll be using your “why" as a filter. For example in the evening you want to talk with your friend on the phone, then to watch this new series everyone is talking about. IF you put your WHY first, you’ll find the time to learn English first or you’ll watch this series in English. You can start with 5 minutes a day. Watch my new video next week on how to learn English 5 minutes a day.

And remember people who have changed their lives: passed English exams, can speak fluently, pass job interviews in English are not more intelligent or confident than you. The only difference is they found their “why", decided to achieve their dreams. Understanding what you want is not easy, it’s a process of trial and error! Try one thing, think, whether you like it or not, then do something else. If you have your “why" it won’t be a major problem, you know you’ll get there anyway. I always say to my students: in order to learn a language, you need to make 9000 mistakes! That’s the only way to do it! It is not easy to learn English but there is a reward at the end so you just need to find your WHY and KEEP GOING!
