History and Etymology of render

This verb was used for the first time in  the 14th century. It comes from Anglo-French “rendre" which means “to give back" or “surrender".

1 to change (something) into a different substance by some process

Examples:

to melt down

render lard

It’s important to render the fat from the duck.

2  to do a service for another or to give something to someone such as help or service.

Example:

render an apology

He witnessed a car accident and stopped to render assistance.

3 to reproduce or represent by artistic or verbal means

Examples:

to present or perform

to give a performance: render a song

The novel renders a portrait of life in ancient Rome.

4 To make an image on a computer screen appear solid and like a real object

Example:

rendered images of products
