Why?
I can't believe that by October 1, smockets will be a but a vague memory of what once was a free and pro-individualism institution. Tolerable...but that's not the issue here. Smoking is part of the already-constricting-and-still-dealing culture of the student population and taking it away would mean no more pre-class smoking sessions. What else?
- Goodbye to what JV calls the Smoking Varsity.
- Where will I run into my friends in the middle of a bad day?
- Goodbye to the new friends I would've made over the next 2 1/2 years of smocket life
- No more of the escape to nicotine when my classes are unbearable
- Hello to cliques, and territories, and designated benches.
And the dress code. Don't even get me started on that. I just hope that they don't make us wear ugly uniforms if it has to go that far. They should just make a uniform polo with the freedom to wear any bottoms and any shoes. It's important to let people look however way they want. Self-expression is more than just freedom to wear what one pleases, it's about projecting one's personality at a single silent moment. The minute i stepped on the campus in my turqouise T, i suddenly knew people... I knew who i could get along with and with whom I couldn't. You could tell whether a person is smart, ugly, bad taste, rich, cool, or slutty just by the polo's, t's, tanks, shorts, pants, skirts that people chose to don.
Yes, it's important. The culture of the Ateneo is what's on the line, people!
